Have you thought about a DR wheeled strimmer? Or similar 4 stroke mowers engine on them. They use the really thick line easily too.

I have one of the DR wheeled strimmers and it is very good but if mulching bramble it is going to eat through cord and changing it is not as quick as you might hope.

Oops did not read the op very well. I've got one too and the cord can be awkward. Good for thick grass though.

Import a 555fxt from sweden, (unless husky uk will sell you one, they wouldn't last time I checked) mine get used as yours, although we don't hold full revs all day. Much better in the woods with a shorter shaft and thumb throttle too.

I've got a pair of FS460's and they get used with shredder blades on some pretty heavy stuff. Both have been very reliable one is a very early model too.

Europe wide "Petrol" is going to be E10 content which might cause running problems. Diesel now often contains 8% bio diesel.

FS460 here too. Maybe the problem was the mulcher blade - the resistance of brambles wouldn't be anything close to thick grass, so maybe it was close to "no load" some of the time. Thats not good, same as running it with the string too short.

Thanks for all the advice folks, and the kind offer of a loan Felix.

 

Not too keen on buying an older Stihl as the previous owner may have treated it even worse than I appear to have treated mine.

 

Think I will probably go for the same machine again but be anally careful with it in terms of oil choice and throttle control. Turning it down a bit on the 'h' screw sounds like a sensible idea too.

 

The import only husky's look very good, but the advantage of buying the same machine is that I will have plenty of spare parts.
