There are certain areas of this job where there are huge (and rather embarrassing) gaps in my knowledge.

 

Chains are one of them.

 

So I was getting some new ones for the 201s and the guy said "oh I see you have Demi rond" which is I presume half chisel, "you don't want full carré?" Which I presume is full chisel.

 

So I plumped for one of each and will road test them a bit later this week for your delectation. Although if any have you have any observations on their respective performance, I'm all ears.

 

He said that full chisel is faster but harder to sharpen, is he right? What do you guys swear by?

 

Here's a pic of the two chains side by side.

The thing is with full chisel if you blunt it you have to file the lead edge back to a point other wise it cuts like a banana but with the semi it is rounded off so usually if it's blunted you don't loose a big chunk of your cutter that you have to file back to hence it's easier to sharpen, the semi is preferred for dirty wood!

Saying that I had a metal magnet of a large sycamore last week that took 2 teeth clean off a semi chisel chain on a 5ft bar on the 88 ,the full chisel I had on the 395 seems to have faired a lot better in metal ...but I think that's more Carlton verse Oregon with that issue.

Full isn't harder to sharpen but it is easier to blunt, which is to say its less forgiving if you hit something.

 

Full is more aggressive and providing the saw has the grunt, it will cut faster

They just need to be sharpened at different angles, I wouldn't say either was massively more difficult. In theory semi chisel stays sharp longer and full cuts slightly faster.

That bottom one looks as though it has more of a "Square " grind to me. Top one has the rounded grind like you get with a file sharpen.

He did say "carré" which translates as square.

Ahh, thanks, you still use a round file though right?

Your choice ...if you put that chain on a grinder (other than a real fancy one) then you will keep that grind shape... if not then you will turn it into the top one. in my umble opinion sir :biggrin:
