Errr No....

That's where your very wrong the railway will alway be there and will alway require maintenance

And I use my tickets across to spic protect or hand back any job so far m not relying on or just specialised in one trade

Yes the railways will aways be there and need maintaned but it doesn't mean they'll carry on the way they are the now.

All sounds completely different to when i worked on the track, we definately never had days of for rain even when working trackside de vegging.

If thats the case why do so many companies subbing to railways go bust??

Round my area about 10 yrs ago every man with a saw ticket and there dog was working on railways now no one does it and 3 local companies went bust/folded. 1 of them would have close to 50 men at 1 point.

In the old days it was quite normal for forestry workers to not work in the rain, think got choice to sit in tea hut til lunch and work in afternoon or brave the morning and go home at lunch. And that was fairly normal even in the private plantig gangs where all on piece work

Yes your right firm,s go bust from time to time, but Iv been on 18 years now and there's still a lot of the old faces about

Every now n then there's a shake up but it's not long till things go back to normal

Progress is slow on LuL due do all the rules n regs plus as Iv said it's mainly geared up for engineering houses "nights" witch are 01:00 till 04:00 average due to trains running long hours in line clear "tunnels". If your working near depots at the end of the lines you could be talking 02:00 to :04:00

If the weather is cold LuL won't turn the power off at all to avoid it freezing up this happens for a week or too normally

And as about 90% of contractors don't hold ticked to work days anyway as work carried out on days is restricted

So all in all a complete different set up to NR

Would I work on NR............never

Now this is quite an intriguing thread...to say the least.

Ive never worked the Railways but I'm often out early at weekends and live next to the WCML access points and noticed the hoards of white vans and orange coated masses...and wondered what they were doing sitting in their vans...now I know..."Working".

Cheers for the insight and an indication for the ridiculous price of fares and total disregard for the customer service by all Rail companies in general.

Everyone here seems to miss a certain point he made, he may not start work until the railway says so.

I've done highways contracts and we had to mass and wait until the highway boys said it's all clear. We often had people give us a beep and the finger on the way past, probably thought we were sleeping on their dollar no doubt.

Sorry about that mate, hope I didn't wake you up.:001_tongue:

So, to sum up this thread.

Poor management leads to high or excessive costs!

Elf n safety me thinks.

When I was on Highway work there would be lane closures booked for 9pm (traffic count permitting), many nights the count was still too high at 11pm or even midnight by which time we'd been on shift 4 or 5 hours and not so much as lifted a finger.

bit of a derail Eggs but sometimes there's a lane closure for just road sweeping etc and you think why on earth did they do that on a busy night and not wait longer.

is there always a traffic count? Just interested.

I don't know if it's still the same now. When I worked on the roads rules seemed to vary depending on what county we were working in.

Traffic counts were always carried out on major roads. If the Traffic Safety Officer said the count was too high no closers went on.

The amount of wasted money on big road jobs is unbelievable. I've seen lorry after lorry load of Tarmac rejected (even in insulated bodies) because it has gone cold whilst waiting to get the cones out.
