For a freelance to make 23,500 they would need to be on just over £100 a day.

Or £110 if spending the £1000 training and £500 PPE

If you are a subby in the tree game don't you need ropes and saws and transport etc too?

Rough estimates£23,500

About £22,000 including National Insurance contributions.

Plus £500 odd in PPE, maybe another £1000 training

He would have to be charged out at at over £100 to break even.

the big firms seem to keep rolling on, loads of paye arborists and plenty of contracts, bosses go skiing

I think the answer is to go self employed as a subbie, if your as good as you think you are you'll be in high demand and be able to charge good money. But you'll have to slug it out for a few more years until you build your reputation.

They should pay everyone £300 a day and go to Butlins, the bastards.

There is no single, correct answer to the original question.

There are two types of answer-

One from those who employ.

One from those who are employed.

I like to think I treat my guys like humans and pay a fair rate - including setting up pensions. If they are unhappy about anything they feel comfortable to come and talk to me. Theyve all been with me a long time and I'm happy with them.

As for what I pay them, thats between us - I wonder how many on here would really reveal their exact wage?

My mate says.....

I know someone who...

The fat bloke down the pub recons....

Heard it all before.

Ask a prospective employer what they are willing to pay or tell them what you want.
