Hi all, I'm knew to the forum, I've lurked for quite some time, and found arbtalk to an invaluable tool and wealth of information.

I've always had transits, but am know looking Into a single cab 110 or 130 hicap tipper. Obviously being a 3.5 tonner there will always be issue with legality, this aside for a minute. How capable is a 110 or 130 tipper as a weight carrier. Is it a viable chip truck ? What sort of weights of chip could be carried without causing damage?

I had a 130 tipper, they're rubbish chip trucks, I put a weighed 1.25 tonne of topsoil on one time, it was practically undriveable, like a boat.

"Are they a viable chip truck?" In my opinion, NO.

Hi Mick

Thanks for your experience, I've seen one of the local firms with one but never towing a chipper maybe thats why.

Be good to hear from anyone who's had any other experience of them , or set theirs up differently, who might have a positive view of it, or weather it's just a not an option.

Carrying capacity of a landy all depends on the weight of body fitted unless you need the 4x4 capability of 1 you are but off with something else.

I use a 130 landy because i need it for the work i do.

I would have thought a ton carrying capacity, if you find it swaying about a bit go for the HD rollbars. Our landy cherry picker is the lions share of 3 ton and is not that bad on the road when you consider that the weight is so high, that said you would not want to go bowling into a roundabout to quickly.

We have a 130 but its too small for your main truck if you do general domestic work. You can probably legally carry more then a transit as I imagine it weighs less..? It cost more than any of our other vehicles, is the oldest, least comfortable to drive and carrys the least, it is therefore generally the back up vehicle, but when you need to go off road which we do every now and then it is invaluable. It will also last forever in a triggers broom sort of way.

Greatly appreciate all these replies obviously a good time of day to catch people. Looks like staying legal would be easier with a 110/130 as the boxes are smaller and can't be sprayed as full as a transit. I have a large ally box on my lwb transit and questioning if I'd miss it, but don't want to get nicked and want to stay legallegal obviously.

Nice set up Kevin, unfortunately wouldn't work for what we do. Like the 101 on the roof, could have one man sat on chair strapped to the roof and do roadside hedges with it reaching off

Being a small set up don't want to have to keep ploughing money into it. Transits in my experience have been pretty good on that front, but have a very small payload smaller than a land rover.

the 130 tipper (kmr body) at work gets filled up with chip and drives fine, not sure about weights mind, and obviously one has to take it a bit slower than when unladen but id say thats the same for most vehicles.
