  1. 1. Are there too many tree surgeons in the UK?

    • Far too many; so much competition I can barely survive!

    • Not too many but don't need any more!

    • Could do with a few more to be honest!

    • Nowhere near enough. So much wood and so little expertise!

Just remember that the work you get will take work away from someone else.

Its a finite pie. The more people that want a slice, the smaller the slices get.

Not completely true.

If prices are lower, more work WILL get done.

There may be a only a certain amount of money to go round, but if firms become more efficient and make more profit from the same turnover, more work can be done.

The reason tree surgeons are popping up left right and centre is simple. Climbers working for other people don't get paid enough. If the rates of pay where better for climbers then they would stay working for companies longer and not feel the need to set up on there own.

It is very cheap to set your self up you can get a truck, climbing kit and a couple of saws for less than five grand. That sort of money is very easy to raise for start up costs, so makes having your own tree surgery company far too accessible.

It is a no brainer work for some one else for peanuts and not much prospect of ever earning more than 120 quid a day or set your self up and earn more, Have better prospects and who knows you could be the next Bartletts or Gristwood and Toms!!

i have lived and worked in my town all my life, for the last 11 years i have had sign written vehicles and owned a big mog with my name all over it. and i still meet folk that have never heard of me or seen me about and they have lived here all there lives. different peolpe notice different things. so it isnt easy getting your number across to folk. so usually word of mouth works best.

yeah there are a lot more now than there ever have been. But people and businesses will come and go. Competition is a good thing and can only help to make improvements and push the bar higher. However the reality is there will always be one who will slash their prices, and there will always be the cheap gardener or mate with a saw brigade!

I am not saying for one moment it is easy running your own company and not every day you will earn a lot more than a lead climber. But what are you suppose to do climb for someone else for 120 a day for the rest of your climbing days or set yourself up with your own firm build up assets and have the chance of being the next big contractor out there? I know the route that i would take.

Yes with your own firm you are the lead climber so any thing else you make that day bonus, i wouldn't get that working for some one else it would just be 120 a day. You wouldn't run your own business if the money and the rewards didn't exceed a lead climbers money as it would be pointless!!

you have no idea how nieve this sounds mate. once you start your own business thats it, you cant just say one day, i have had enough. there is consequences for your actions. andyou have bills to pay, i have went months with no wages, sleepless nights and stress. why? so i could pay others wages because it is a big responsibility holding someone finances in your hands. when the chipper breaks down wages need paid, when a car is left across a driveway and you cant work it costs you money, putting money in the bank cost you money, taking your money out of the bank costs you money. 120 quid a day, thats 600 quid a week, 30k a year. i would take that job tomorrow.
