  1. 1. Are there too many tree surgeons in the UK?

    • Far too many; so much competition I can barely survive!

    • Not too many but don't need any more!

    • Could do with a few more to be honest!

    • Nowhere near enough. So much wood and so little expertise!

And? So what if there is? I studied arboriculture and unashamedly so!

Because I could tell you were regurgitating dogma with little relevance to what tree guys in the private (or public sector) do.

What we do is very, very rarely for the good of the tree.
It's for the good of the customer.
'My oak is getting a bit big'.
It sure is, it's an oak, and you have a 30' garden.
Always try and educate, and walk away from the really heinous requests.
Best I can do, really.

Oh right, well that "dogma" is tree biology, I'm not sure what else I can say to that odd comment?

As an experienced climber and now surveyor running my own gig what do I need to do to become a "tree guy"? Top trees and call it a reduction?

The attitude that 'the customer is always right', & 'if I don't do it someone else will'.

Then after that ' take the money and run'. You'll then be a tree guy.

I've had the same 'discussions' with the same people for several years:banghead:

You're wasting your time!

Gary I've got a tree that needs crowning.
Could you give me a price please?
It's approximately as tall as a house.

Combine that with the customer telling you how he would do it and you have arrived :D
