  1. 1. Are there too many tree surgeons in the UK?

    • Far too many; so much competition I can barely survive!

    • Not too many but don't need any more!

    • Could do with a few more to be honest!

    • Nowhere near enough. So much wood and so little expertise!

SWB's right, running a business is not everyones cup of tea, there's loads of stress involved, and yes the thought of not being able to pay wages is the worst as it affects other people directly. The profit margins are way lower than you think; its easy to look at your boss charging 500-700 for a days work and think he must be minted, trust me he's not.:001_smile:

I make a point of letting staff know how much things cost, so they take more care with them and also so they appreciate the real running costs of the buseiness.

Dont forget the 5weeks paid holiday, sick pay, paternity leave, training and so on.

From what I've seen of the typical British workforce, 2/3rds of them dont deserve a job anyway, dont give a damn about the job the kit just how quickly they can get done and go home whether the job is finished or not. And if they break kit, well thats ok, its the bosses problem, he can fix it!

if there wasnt so many useless lazy folk in this country then it would be harder to be successful. they can stay in their beds and pubs for all i care, more for me:001_cool:

Thats the one.

Customers are always amazed at what we get done, they seem shocked by how hard we work.

I don't think we are any thing special, but people are used to seeing lazy buggers doing sack all!!!!

  • 3 months later...

Started this job in '78 and went self-employed in '87. I have always striven to do the best possible job and juggled college in as well. In '87 there were so few in Yellow pages that I used to get work upto 90 miles away regularly. Flat out wasn't the word!

Now it seems there's a 1001 'tree surgeons' all 'fully qualified'. I'm not knocking the decent guys but there's a lot of dead wood out there.

Anyway....rant over, wine's kicking in and I'm too old and bodily knackered to bother now:001_smile: PS...still ain't made a fortune.
