Hi I would say its elm it looks just like some that I hoiked out of thr river Stur by me , elm has a very distinct smell , cant describe it but very dectinctive , it would make a nice desk , good luck with whstever you do make, wish some elm would come my way I only have a couple of boards left

well the bark looks rough enough to be elm but i do not recognise the timber as elm being such a pale colour. i'm not saying it isn't elm but i've never seen it that cream in colour.

 

any chance of a close up of the wood itself and if possible the endgrain.

 

if i can see the grain close up the i should be able to tell what it is.

 

 

is it heavy?

We used to produce Elm flooring and a certain customer specified 160m2 of white Elm only for a posh London apartment, you get (or used to) quite a variety in the colour of the timber.

 

You still do get the range - in France they used to define it as orme rouge and orme blanche (red and white elm). It can get so dark it looks like walnut right through to so pale it looks like ash. The smell however is an easy way to distinguish them.
