Someone came on here the other year and proudly announced had invested 40k of his own money in firewood equipment, when I worked it out that meant selling 1200 cube just to cover the machinery, not allowing for buyibg the timber, fuel, labour etc, take a long time for a return without grant money

Since I started this thread I've had another 2 emails asking if my logs are kiln dried.

Clearly the propaganda has worked.

:001_rolleyes:

You should reply "yes we sell both kiln dried to 30% moisture content or naturally seasoned to 20%"

Bet they'll still choose the Kilned logs.

I blame the stove installers and some of the firewood guys like that vid I posted a few weeks back kiln dried V naturally seasoned. Its all utter rubbish.

I operate one of those global aero kilns. The grant money is rubbish, but there's very little maintenance.

If it turns up to the customer and it's dry, what's the problem?

I have no problem with home produced kiln dried wood, arb waste fuelling the kiln etc etc etc, it's the fact that it's being sold as better than air dried that bothers me. It ain't. It's a sales pitch, and the customers are falling for it because they have absolutely no idea what it really means, moisture content, wood species, what's softwood, what's hardwood...density calorific value only burn hardwood, blah blah blah.... Come on, importing it is so not green and it's wrong in my opinion.

I tell all my customers that it's really very very very simple...dry is all you need.

Your right Richard it is just a sales pitch.

So we adapt ours.

We only do couple of hundred ton.

But we emphasise the differences and kinda go for a Stella sales pitch "reassuringly expensive" hand cut from SSSi sites so supporting conservation etc only best species air dried to a moisture level that makes no difference etc.

We find people support us because we are a small operation.

And anyway I've seen Wills set up ... Nothing to be scared off!
