Don't forget your Anvils

Looked at two chippers recently that weren't chipping very well despite new blades.

 

As the title says, don't forget to check, sharpen or change your anvils chaps, they are just as important to keep a sharp square edge as it is to keep your blades sharp. If you are getting stringy bits in the chip it is most likely anvil gap or rounded edge on the anvil.

 

Anvils are among the most neglected chipper parts.

Did ours recently. Got a bit of bar with a hole in it, put it across the frame and with a suitable bolt 'draw' the anvil out of the tight slot, using the threaded hole in the anvil itself.

 

Flip it over and put it back. Job done

Schiesling anvils are super easy to turn or change. There is a single bolt that holds a plate over a wedge that retains the anvil. You remove the bolt, plate and wedge. Then screw the threaded bar on the end of the chipper blade changing tool and pull the anvil out.

 

Takes about 3 minuets in total.
