chain oil and fish

Got a job to fell a load of trees over a pond that is full of Koi's. There are some big ones in there ( at least 20).

 

I am however not sure if chain oil is potentially lethal to them?

Also i am under the understanding that any vibrations from dropping logs is also potentially a killer offish.

 

Can anyone confirm this this?

Yes I know of people who have killed fish with chain oil forming a film over an adjacent pond.

Never heard of them being killed by vibrations though.

Mineral oils can be a problem and shouldn't be used near water. Small quantities of veg oil should be OK, anyone with a respectable environmental policy will probably insist on it

 

Last place I worked near fish was a trout farm where a large limb had dropped in without causing any loss, the owner said it would have to hit one to do any harm.

 

Water transmits energy much better than air so I am guessing a half hundredweight dropped into a relatively shallow body of water from a dizzy height might not do Mr bubbles any good

Done that today and ziplined everything over it including chogs, had to use pull line on lower bits

Try rapeseed oil instead of regular mineral oil.

Bio oil, freely available.

You'll never kill a fish by throwing logs at them. I tried thousands of times in my youth with zero success.

The issue is more the chips from the saws. The fish think they are food, eat them, can't digest them and die

Yes, I wasn't told down the pub that they love eating fish n sawchips.... but maybe that was a load of Pollocks?
