  10. @Ledburyjosh Yes, all good points you make there.. The MDL unit does have an adjustable feed speed, with stress control. It also has the advantage of driven tracks (with a slightly counter intuitive hand-control system, I found). Weighing in at 480 kgs, this is crucial ! I inspected it at their yard today, but didn't have space to bring any branches, to properly test it out.. πŸ™„ I spoke to a Scottish commercial owner/user who rates his machine well. I'm hoping to try/use/hire a machine in Preston, if all goes well. The machine is pretty much identical to the Oshai tracked chipper, but less than half the price.. It's also sold directly into the Japanese market too.

I did a few lifty and dead branches and some epicormic with it on first. Lack of vision annoying and you want the top of the bar for the really frizzy bits. You don't want to backbar heavily though. It's rough and it throws the chain if you haven't got the sidecover tight.
  13. So did I, after a period of learning how it behaves. It opens up the possibility of deeper cuts and undercuts. None of my other chainsaws have guards. Be careful and keep other limbs well away.
  14. You’ve taken the guard off you maniac!

  16. Took the plunge. Dead handy.
  17. I would email Courant and see what they say.
  18. The supplier confirms that it's an spLIFE splice, which answers the original concern with the slim eye. I asked some further questions about how they're able to offer such a splice, even with a certification mark, but the conversation fell apart, maybe due to language issues. They said that the splice was done according to the "instructions for the Squir rope". Dunno if it means there's some sort of special use or licensing of the spLIFE method for Courant ropes. Not sure where this leaves me with the eye; I'll probably not use it.
  19. I have a Stovax Stockton 8 and noticed that the fire wouldn't shut down if you shut all the dampers and put it down to the stove meeting the latest regs. Not being able to gain full control of the stove bugged me so I set about working out where the air was getting in and traced it to the top damper so I made a plate to reduce the air entering the front of the top damper and got the stove working as I wanted it. I can now shut down the stove and subdued the burn as you should be able to do.
  20. Yes, I managed it eventually, but it had spun very slightly and it was very tight, but a little patience and persistence won the day. thanks.
  21. "SUCCESS" mananged to remove the woodruff key, replaced it, timed it up and reassembled, first pull with choke, got a fire, second pull and she roared into life. I haven't got the bar on her at the moment so the governor kicks in pretty quickly, but jeez it has got some serious torque reaction, I'll put the bar/chain on tomorrow and maybe even put her into some wood. I got a big stick next to my cottage I felled earlier in the year to sort, so at least I won't have to carry it far.
  22. I always punched the thing out with a sharp awl. Line it up on one end and give the awl a tap with a hammer, it should pop out.
  23. Looking for a self employed groundsman for some odd days, possibly something regular. Generally stress free days, mostly domestic work. West norfolk, north norfolk 07985148458
  24. well it didn't go quite as planned Stubby, having got initially a good sign she was going to burst into life, it quickly became apparent it wasn't to be, further investigation revealed a sheared woodruff key, I have a large selection of those but the problem is removing the sheared piece from the crank, its managed to get itself firmly secured. not to worry just another delay in a very tired arm.

  26. Still no piccies, sorry. I promise I will do one day. A house in woodland which is for sale, and client wants it to look more saleable. Cue him hiring a chipper, and me turning up with a van full of pruning gear, and ladders on top. Even with one of his staff feeding the chipper, and one of my mates helping me, there's still a gentle day's work left for tomorrow. There was a lot of walking, and a lot of thin brash to clear, and lots of ivy. We had a Greenmech Quadchip 160, which seemed very happy with branches up to four inch or so, but not so much with anything bigger, or the leafy stuff we gathered up, unless we could run a nice branch through at the same time.
