I’m doing a bit of informal research around arborists moving into sub-contracting or starting small tree businesses. For those who’ve made the jump (or are thinking about it): What was the hardest part in your first 6–12 months — outside of the climbing itself? Quoting, pricing, finding work, admin, cashflow, insurance, compliance, something else? Genuinely interested in real experiences rather than textbook answers Thanks

Yeah, but why should we bother ourselves, we'll be dead by the time the world is proper fckd, or nearly dead anyway. Let the kids work it out. If China are burning coal then we, as a nation should lower ourselves to the bottom of the barrel to match them. Screw the descendants. Or... we can show ourselves to be the world leaders of our imagination, take the mix of climate changes, dwindling oil supplies and children and be the best we can be to leave them an inheritance worth living in. But where is the fun in that when we can slate the country we live in at every opportunity, grass is always greener, here is never good enough.

Well funnily enough I met with both Tom and Jerry today at thier Scottish site. I was getting training and accretted. Was a great day and learned how to properly use the Mill plus Tom did a cracking job of dialing the Mill in properly.

Problem i see it as more in reply to the last couple of comments is its the ever stricter emission levels forced onto manufacturing. same with cars and vans. They are not built like the old days, highly strung and often thinner materials to save weight. chippers (like grinders) have a tough life! must be hard to get the balance right for sure. i had a timber wolf 230 before and it also had its share of issues over time. My point was it broke, they fixed it in a few hours. Every day im not working (and so my team ) we lose thousands as all other bills still keep coming so i was very pleased with them getting me back to it.

To add to the above - include reference to relevant documents regarding working practises etc (can be provided if required). The guy assessing the documents will almost never have any experience in tree works so they just need to understand you’re working to guidelines/standard and how you stay safe during the process.

Unless you're a bona fide subcontractor then you don't need your own professional insurances. If they want you to act as one, then that's a very different arrangement altogether and will cost them a lot more money.
