Interesting Biomechanics

Here's a Beech with pretty amazing branch grafts.

It looks as if two smaller lateralls are embracing the larger mast branch.

Is this a case of self support or just bizarre space sharing.

The Arch is what's left of the gateway (built in 1766) into the residence of William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham & Brittish Prime minister;

As you can see, the Tree is forcing out the brick work to the right.

The structure is going to be subject of a moving or repair project.

Our spec was just an aerial inspection and removing the significant deadwood directly above the Arch and enclosure.

So, which came first.....................the Tree or the Arch?

On the last piccy, it looks like the stems are having a "Group hug" seems the new office culture is "branching out" into the natural world, or perhaps the office culture is reverting back to nature

When I first read the title of this thread I was thinking "contradiction in terms".

No mate, English Springer Spaniel highly trained gundog, it may lick them to death.

Saw somethingt similar in a beech once, no where near as impressive as that though. Good find though:001_smile:

The tensile strength of that top branch connected to the trunk, must be right at it's limit, bearing in mind the side split in evidence.

May I suggest that the smaller fused branch was pushed behind the larger limb on the lhs to keep it clear of the arch?

Just a thought.
