  1. As a few have stated above, it comes down to geographical location and if anyone else is supplying that type of equipment. In Hampshire there’s already a few companies doing it so most of the client base is sewn up, unless you can provide a similar service for cheaper! In the hire game it’s the service not so much the machines that will hold clients for example my preferred suppliers will allow me to collect the machine the afternoon before or return the machines the next morning without charging an additional day, they also have excellent machine support if the machines go down! Good luck if you do take the jump.
  2. There’s plenty of companies out there that will help you through it - have you asked Chas for a checklist? Easier to work through it yourself, most things are standard documents that you can buy as a template works out far more cost effective then paying a consultant (unless your time is more valuable).
  3. Well as the tree was already known/owned by the LA and had previous surveys done, all it would have cost is the admin fee & time it takes to update files….. so £50-100???? (Happy to be informed otherwise)
  4. No but the tree was under third party management so the LA should have put a TPO on the tree. The contractor has done nothing wrong, the LA should have protected its tree! How hard would it have been to put a TPO on it - they can’t have their cake and eat it, I appreciate it was a lovely tree and a real shame to lose however this faux outrage is slightly ridiculous from the authorities point of view (public - yes although a minutes silence is laughable).
  5. Virtue signalling at its finest! As you say soon to be forgotten but people love to feel like their opinion matters. They used a mewp because they should & could, most commercial guys including myself use a mewp for 95% of our works due to HSE guidelines.
  6. How did they not? Removed on h&s grounds - sought the advice of a professional survey and undertook the recommended works. Lovely tree so it’s a shame but heavy footfall and traffic area. Significant….. so much so nobody bothered to put in an application.
  7. Hi Pal, I didn’t make use as it was only up to 2 year deal at 0%. Finance rates are still very low so made use of having the additional cash in the bank and bought another excavator 🤣
  8. Offset with native planting always goes down a treat imo
  9. If I’m honest I’m surprised this doesn’t happen more often. The sector is full of companies winning contracts that they don’t have the staff or experience to deliver on. Answer rely on climbers/staff who will turn up to situations like this and think that’s ok to climb as the onsite supervisor agrees, also helps it will look cool and it will save money/time. A man put his life on the line to cut a tree down and the supervisor ok’d it! The book should be thrown at the company and I hope lessons can be learnt, the key one in this situation - **************** Instagram, stop and engage your brain. Goes without saying i wish the guy a speedy recovery as we all make mistakes, however a company should be structured and experienced to stop people making these kind of mistakes.
  10. Only decision the climber should of had to make that day, is where shall i sit while they winch that over.
  11. It’s a buyers market atm for machinery (not crack)
  12. £34k included guarding and grab! Yeah, I’m going to fine tune it as I go s30 hitch next.
  13. Finally arrived… not used in anger yet but as rock steady as I remembered!
  14. not just the machinery that needs greasing
  15. Breakfast £5 Lunch £5 Dinner £20 With regards to you working away, are you contractually obliged? because if not I’d want (and I’d pay) a bonus as well!
  16. No worries - get your first aid +F course done as very useful! Plenty of rail work available and as every employer on here will attest to hard working labour is hard to come by and worth its weight in gold. Try and get in with one of the bigger firms as they will have a variety of work which will mean you’ll find your niche….. then if I was you spread your wings and spend some time in Canada or Scandinavia 🤣 don’t disregard the little things either - be the on time man sharpening his saw, cleaning up, sorting ropes, being friendly to clients/customers this will speak volumes!
  17. Got any idea what sector you want to work in? Rail, domestic, commercial, forestry? Are you willing to travel/work away? Side note - why on earth would you question where somebody got the money from to better themselves 🤣🤣
  18. Having gone through this; you can write what you want in a contract doesn’t mean a solicitor/judge won’t wipe his arse with it. Bottom line is you’re paying someone to perform a task, if they need training to perform said task that is the burden of the employer to provide training (at the companies cost). Unfortunately it’s a risk/cost of doing business, if you don’t want this problem employ someone who already has the quals that is the only “risk” free way however you would be liable for the refresher courses 🤣
  19. You will have no luck and as suggested it’s shakey ground docking final pay (although companies do it). Try putting a training plan in over say 12 months, stagger training rather then all at once and over the 12 Months they should have earnt more then enough for you to cover the training.
  20. Yeh, I’ve tried in the past but due to let down/not collecting it’s usually caused more stress.
  21. Hi all, after a bit of advice - we have a job coming up where we will be clearing 50/60 x hardwood trees (birch, chestnut, oak) and 300 x softwood (lawson will be chipped for bio) we now have the ability to store large amounts of timber at my yard. I was thinking is it worth transporting the hardwood to the yard and processing for fire wood (relying on haulier). The crux is we do not own any processing gear, so would look to subby that bit out and then sell it in bulk (green)by the artic load. Is there some money to be made or am I better off just chipping all of it and getting money back that way? If we can sell it bulk and there’s money we can buy some processing gear as we will start to take loads back from our jobs as we now have the storage space, traditionally just chipped everything as not had the space to store. TIA
