  1. Was 16 apparently!! Sycamore Gap tree at Hadrian's Wall cut down by 'vandals' WWW.BBC.CO.UK Police are investigating if the much-loved landmark was deliberately cut down by vandals. john...
  2. Not quite the same, but there have been numerous cases where a bank has paid money into someones account by mistake and they have drawn it out and spent it. When it goes to court, the courts decide would it be reasonable to think the account holder did not realise it was a mistake. What i mean is, if someone paid, say £5000 into my account by mistake, i would certainly notice. If on the other hand i had £567,983,8765,235 in there and paid £10,000 in and out every day, then i might reasonable not notice. If the court rules that they would have noticed it is theft... All i am saying is, a free £8,000 sounds great, but if there is anything that you have now, or MIGHT like in future, say a shotgun or firearms cert, or perhaps insurance or further loans, anything that hints of dishonesty, will wreck that for you... I cannot see they will not notice.. I would ask for the settlement figure and make sure. You were expecting to pay the £8,000, do not take the risk of wrecking your future hoping they will not notice.. It is not worth it... john..
  3. If you want to rust proof things, Waxoyl is the stuff. It will look like shit, but when you steam it off, the thing will be like brand new.. john..
  4. So far as i know, minimum for clearance for ANYTHING over a highway is 16' 6" and for electric cables it is 19' john..
  5. Hi there, Now, i know **************** all of such things, but would it be possible to have a reel type arrangment on your harness as follows.. Nice light spring in the reel so that you can pull the saw upwards and away from yourself to make a cut, unimpeded by a heavy return spring. Now for the clever bit.. Could the reel have a "vee" shaped slot where the rope pays out. This would mean that if there were to be a knot or similar in the rope about 3 feet from the end, you could grab the saw and lift it up to use it and the rope [and knot] would pass through the wide part of the "vee" unimpeded, but then you could simply, pull the saw in towards you and then drop it, only this time, as the rope payed out again, the knot would, [the rope now being pulled in a downwards direction] catch in the lower narrow part of the "Vee" and therefore, the saw would come to a hard stop as you wanted??? john..
  6. I am not the only one that is careful and fusses about such things then?? That is good to hear.. I was a bit worried that if i went on a chainsaw course that they would all laugh at me for doing this.. john..
  7. Now i do like that, but having seen the price, no thanks.. £650?? Yeah right. You would have to be nuts. Another 200 and you could buy a proper compressor with a honda engine on it.. Another 300, [so £950] and you could get a decent job like this.. john..
  8. I was wondering that as i saw the thing itself for sale but with no batteries or charger.. john..
  9. For MANY MANY years i used a large propane tank fitted with a schrader valve for such things [mobile air i mean] I would pump it up from a compressor or even a forecourt air line. One thing i did a lot, it i would have to go to pick up a car [with my breakdown lorry] only to find all the car tyres flat. A medium sized propane tank will easily pump up 4 tyres.. john..
  10. I would say that there is precisely ZERO chance of seating tyres on rims with one of them.. john..
  11. Eh eh, come on.... john..
  12. Never heard of them?? john..
  13. No, i am definitely me!!! Sorry if i piss you all off sometimes though, that is just me! [i specialise in it..] john..
  14. Eh, me?? john..
  15. Thanks again!! Not sure which one i would be doing, depends how deep the pockets are of them that are supposedly paying. I would like to do the felling one too though, bound to be very interesting, so i would like that one a lot. I read on here somewhere that they want you to use a saw with a maximum bar length of 15" I was planning on using my 14" saw, so i guess that would be ok?? john..
  16. Thank you ever so much!!!! That is SOOO helpful!!! If i do it, you can be sure i will do a write up. Give you all a good laugh if nothing else!! I did a certificate in "The duty to manage asbestos" back in March. That was interesting! Came top of the class with a perfect score in the exam too. [thanks to preparing] Now i know what to expect i can have a good swot up. Thank you LOADS for that.. john..
  17. I would happily strip and rebuild theirs!! You are right in what you say though! john..
  18. Well, let me put it like this, They will not be teaching me anything about engines.. john..
  19. That seems ok! I just wondered how they organised it all. john..
  20. Ha ha ha!! You know these course things, is there any paperwork or do you just do things?? If they ask you questions, how do they know you are not cheating and just saying what the other bloke said?? john..
  21. Well, i have yet to see a tree in a workshop... john..
  22. Funnily enough, i have no interest in doing it really, just it was free.. john..
  23. No... Are they not all french in Algeria?? Was not me anyway!! john..
  24. Thats the way to do it!! Besides, as you will have noticed, dry rods are very much nicer to use than damp ones!! There is a lot of variation in rods mind, even of the same type. Different makes vary a lot, with some being horrible and others great Even rods of the same make and sort, but different sizes of the same rod. Vodex for example, i thought the 4mm ones were ok, but the 3.25's horrible!! Murex seem nice in general, Oerlikon Fincord "M" are nice but the bigger ones are slaggy [and hugely expensive], the last lot of Esab ones i tried [OK 46.30] were terrible.. john..
