Hi. I have a kinetic (electric) splitter and wanted to upgrade to a bigger model which ran on petrol a couple of years ago, but the only supplier I could find imported his from China, (it was called a Hornet) and only when someone wanted one. He also said that they did not conform to UK standards. Needless to say I didn’t go for it and got a hydraulic instead. Have to say I still use the kinetic a hell of a lot when the logs are the right size. It’s only 7 ton, but it does pack a punch and for smaller stuff it is far quicker. Only thing I’ve found is the rams aren’t really built to last - the steel isn’t hard enough, but I have a friend who fabricated some spares for me. I got mine from logmaster. The portek ones seem to have a better after sales service and having bought my hydraulic splitter from Rock, I’d look at their kinetic splitter. All of these are electric though. You definitely need some form of table to use them on as they are very low and a killer on the back - I just have a stack of pallets screwed together with a wooden rail at the front to stop the machine falling off.

The amount of people who had their gardens done over the lockdown periods might also be having an impact and now that things have started opening up, there’s not the urgency to get work done

I thought maybe lime, there’s no smell to it, but it’s quite dry

Got a few rounds of it amongst a load of hardwood logs. Can’t work out what it is though. Any ideas?

Managed to pick up an ex display model winch on the cheap as the box was knackered. I’m considering mounting it on my trailer to help pull the splitter onto it and to drag any big lumps of tree I might find that I can’t lift. Anyone had an experience of fitting winches? Is there any suggestions on the battery size and set up? I’m considering a separate battery to the one on the car rather than figuring out all the wiring to get it to the car battery.

Christ, you are on the minority there! I’m constantly moaning about how hot it is whenever I come in from working outside. And she’s constantly saying to bring more wood in!

Yes, it’s aimed at sellers. That’s who I was referring to when I mentioned a sweepstake. What you said about the end users does raise an interesting point though, unseasoned logs can still be sold in 2m3+ quantities as long as it has the relevant paperwork about seasoning it with it. There is nothing to stop the end user ignoring that and burning it anyway. So maybe there should be something in the way of fines for these people of the idea of this legislation is to improve the air quality and reduce pollution? Also emissions from the chimney can be measured from outside, there’s no requirement to enter a property to check. And it’s going to be pretty obvious from the clouds of smoke going up in the air.

Did you get it for free? If so, yes it’s worth splitting and seasoning! It’s quite a light wood and will burn quite quickly, but mix it with other denser wood and it’s fine

Only 1 came up for me and they are 25 miles away as the crow flies. 35 miles on actual roads and would take them an hour to get to me!

I’m interested in the definition of 2m3, does it state anywhere in the regulations how this is measured? Is it a 2m3 Loose load? Or 2m3 stacked? Unless this is defined, then it can always be disputed by either side. This is not the same in the discussion earlier around supply and delivery. This is straightforward, the word supply covers the delivery in the same way as it covers someone picking up logs. I’m a previous life I spend hours and hours drawing up service agreements, processes, policies and the like to ensure it covered regulations - the wording is absolutely key to make sure there is no wiggle room or leave it open to interpretation.

Is there a sweepstake going on how long it will be before someone gets a visit/fine?

Just sat my phone in the end of the trough and used a Bluetooth selfie stick to take the pics. Bit hit and miss, but seems to work

Never seen a red and used to get quite a few greys round here - until we got two kittens that were born to a feral mother, these two hunt, kill and eat everything from mice to squirrels and rabbits! Probably helps that we know we have what appears to be a wildcat that frequents the woods and the local bus yard next to us

Just had a load of logs dropped off for me to process as firewood. In amongst it were a load of decent size pieces of yew. Seems a shame to use them for firewood when they could be milled, would anyone be interested in them? I’m near motherwell

This is my unique outdoor burner. It’s made from two small old fire extinguishers, the flue is an old piece of exhaust from a coach and it has a small stand on the top to heat a kettle. Burns a little like a rocket stove (complete with the roaring noise). Where the two extinguishers join, there is a small baffle plate into the upright one which does well in creating a vortex in the front chamber and a secondary burn chamber in the upright one. Very little Smoke comes out and the heat it kicks out is incredible for such a small stove.

You’re gonna need a bigger log store!

I had some nagging lower back pain, I just grinned and got on with it until I saw an advert for 50% off an assessment with a chiropractor. Went and saw the guy who did a scan of my back, it showed that the middle and top section of my back were far worse than the lower bit. Turned out the lower back pain was because of a hamstring I tore playing football over 10 years ago and my lower back was compensating for lack of movement in my hamstring. My upper back muscles were over developed from years of lifting, splitting and general hard graft, which was why my upper back didn’t hurt as all. 12 sessions later, I have movement in my upper back I didn’t even realise I was missing and lower back pain that has almost disappeared. Expensive, but absolutely worth every penny. So much so I’m now on a “maintenance plan” where I go every 2 weeks to be wrung out like a wet flannel, cracked and twisted in what appears to be medieval torture and then leave with a skip in my step! Stretching is an absolute must and it’s worth considering some yoga - I do it, but I refuse to wear any yoga pants, that’s a step too far!!

I did consider a processor, but all the wood I split is arb waste. The guys I get it from handball everything into the back of their trucks so it’s usually cut to shorter, more manageable lengths - only occasionally get stuff a processor would be happy with.
