  1. Thanks for the top advice. Yes I thought about halving the logs to use less trees and help with lifting. I am not sure how I can keep the posts off the ground? And would appreciate any ideas. Can I use post spike? Or the whole building will be blown away?
  2. Or something like this without the concrete floor but not sure if you just dig a hole for the posts or better to use post mix. Also how to comment the roof to the wall posts?
  3. This the kind of shelter I am after but with unfinished logs
  4. I would like to have some advice, guidance and tips please I plan to build a shelter in our wood, nothing fancy and it will not have a door. I want to use a trees/ timber from the wood and plan to build it over 6-12 month period or even longer. I have never built a timber building before but I am a DIY kind of person. After some internet search I decided to go for something similar to three walls horse shelter may be 16x12 feet or slightly smaller. I will try not to fell any tree just for the building and this mean it will be build for different tree species but we have few blown away and leaners of Oak, beech, ash and wild cherry and beech. The roof will be metal corrugated sheets. I have bought Chinese alaskan mil copy to help with beams and blanks for the wall. I also plan to buy makita battery operated tools etc. Can such building done with a single person, can I use different wood some of it old and other green. The pictures below to give you an idea about the kind of shelter I want. But instead of square posts and beams I prefer it to be unfinished wood like the second picture but not sure one person can carry such large logs. Anybody built similar thing or got any plan/ pictures to share.
  5. Very nice. We'll done
  6. Thanks, can it be milled or it is not worth it.
  7. Another pict
  8. Another pict.
  9. Another wind wind blown tree in our wood. Tree tip was crossing the fence to farmer field and I guess farmer had trimmed it. I hope it is Oak but I am not sure, there is no signs of rot. I did not have a tape with me but it is very long and I was unable to cross my arms around it so I guess over 20 inch thick.
  10. Would it perform?.
  11. How many CC and what is the bar length.
  12. Thanks for your advice. I have already ordered the bay Alaskan copy Last night.
  13. Thanks.
  14. I have checked but Makita DCS5121 is not in the list.
  15. One more question. do I need to buy different chain to use with my Makita DCS5121. I read about ripping chain but not sure which one will fit my saw and where to buy. also I saw Alaskan mill 36 inch on the bay for very good price, I assume they are copy and not original. For occasional hobby milling are they ok?
  16. Thanks. Will give it ago and let you know.
  17. Hi I am after some advice please. can I use my Makita chainsaw DCS5121with 20 inch bar with alaskan mill to mill 16 inch diameter 6 foot long wild cherry logs. this will be my first milling project. I know this will be slow and not efficient but is it possible? can it be done with standard chain which came with the saw?
  18. Good thinking. Well done.
  19. The wood is in Westmidland so just over two hours from you.
  20. More pictures
  21. Funny enough I have just dealt with wind blowen cherry tree 16 inch in diameter. Tree was leaning against other three trees but roots were still in ground and it was alive. I have cut 5 cylinders to make four stools and coffe table. I still have two ther learners which need sorting.
  22. Work of art. Very nice.
  23. Thanks. Are they good for wood. I know they are good for wild life.
  24. Yes sure they have been planted. I think in this section of the wood they planted trees 20 years ago of so because there are some larch trees which still got tree guards around them. Plenty died and never grown more than 4 inches in thickness but the rest are 12-18 inches . One of the dead larch tree was leaning on another tree and not attached to the ground. I have cut is dawn and it got 18 circle so it mats be over 18 years ago but it may have been dead for number of years.
  25. No. the wood has been neglected for long time. The ground is covered by overgrowth which made it difficult to explore. There are parts of the wood we have not seen yet. Do you think they are wild cherry?
