New widescreen stoves - hit or miss?
trigger_andy replied to BowlandStoves's topic in Log burning stoves and fireplaces
Hit for me too. Much rather watch flames dancing around than look at grey metal. -
If we could get the world to follows UK current example that would be an insurmountable task. But if the impossible happened the would would be a much better place for that. We would of course have to stop buying everything from China in the mean time. Stop raping the globe for rare earths to fund our addiction to the tech wee seem unable to live without and of course Electric cars. Its absolute lunacy to 'clean' up our country when we are turning a blind eye to the demands we put on China etc. But my comment stands, the knowledge of what we did to our environment by the way industrialized is open for everyone to see. If India can afford and have the tech to have a Space Program they have the tech and know-how to stop ruining their and surrounding countries surely?

I dont agree with this line of reasoning at all. If we say that the West was at the forefront of of the industrial revolution which started in the late 1700's and we progressively built better and technology to improve the processes. We noted the damage we where doing to the environment and eventually put measures into stop and reverse this. China and India started their own industrial revolution in the late 1800's. They could have easily have benefited from the glaringly obvious damage we where doing and put measures into place to stop it. But being human and the need to catch up that obviously never happened. So fast forward another 150 years, where China and India are manufacturing power houses, with not only their own tech and stealing all of ours, China primarily and they still show no interest, or at best token interest in stopping what they are doing to the environment. Its a falicy that they are only now going through their industrial revolution now and get a free pass to destroy the environment. All the do-gooders out there are completely wasting their time whilst we allow this to continue around the world.

I guess I know where I'll be putting mine now then. Makes me wonder if its even worth having my Bacho Blades re-sharpened by him?

I agree with most of what you're saying but there is no way I could vote for the SNP, or independence with remaining, or re-joining the EU not only on the table but the driving force of their plans. There would be a political vacuum left after 'independence' that no party could fill. The SNP would run Scotland into the ground.

Really great response and help from Steven. He allowed me to buy as few as one blade to see if it would fix my wavey cut issue. Ened up getting 4 and they instantly fixed my wavey issue. Its shocking to think that Bacho are selling blades that cut so bad and that Logosol are recommending them. I notice a significant cutting difference with the Ripper 37 it I was to put a number on it Id say Im getting somewhere between 36 and 38% more speed. The engine hardly struggled at all going though Oak.

If you get 25% for used office furniture I think you're doing well.

Like I wrote earlier, I simply do not believe those figures. Call its a conspiracy theory and laugh but I firmly believe that these numbers are a pure fabrication. The Oil Companies working in cahoots with the Government 'losing' surveys in the Firth of Clyde, the constant and down playing of the reserves still there, Westminster uncovered documents relating to this and how the North Sea Oil propped up the UK's Credit Rating and how the Government was petrified Scotland would go it alone and take their Oil with them. If you want links then Id have to spend ages find them all again. Yes, the North Sea is one of the most challenging places to Drill in the World, or at least was in the 70's. A Whole new way of Building Platforms was needed and the tech involved was akin to putting man into space. (So Ive read and see on Documentaries on Oil) Seems a bit over the top but shows the challenges they faced. But the actual Oil Extraction in the North Sea is relatively straight forward. Brent Crude is a light sweet crude, one of two global benchmarks for oil prices. Its a mix of UK and Norwegian Oil. The Norwegian sector of the North Sea is not any more viable than the UK/Scottish Sector. Its the same shelf, the same formations and same Oil. The difference between the UK Sector and the Norwegian Sector is purely Political. We're told here in the UK its running out so not worth bothering about anymore, Norway is still building Platforms that are designed to last 40 years plus. Keeping in Mind the Platforms built in the 70's, 80's and 90's had a shelf life for only 20 years and have been pushed past that every decade. We now have the technology to extract marginal reserves and reserves in shallow pay zones, as little as 10 meters deep via horizontal drilling. ESP (Electronic Suction Pumps) produce low pressure fields, Water injection to get a fields natural pressure back up again after extensive production and for fracking. Fracking propants, Multi-Lateral Completions, Sand Screens, Intelligent Completions (where I come in) What was considered not worth recovering 10-20 years ago is more than viable and Fields that where seens as running down are back up to 1980's levels. I have Supervised the installation two of three of the only MIC Completions currently in the World on the Grane Platform. Each of these Wells is producing over 20,000 barrels a day. Over Christmas we'll be doing the third there. Since I started in Halliburton in 1998 all Ive done is work directly in the Oil Industry 'at the coal face'. Seems like half my adult life has been spent on the Drill Floor in the UK, Internationally and for the last 12 years in Norway. So feel free to post more links you've found on-line but they simply do not tally up with the reality I've sen for the last 20 years. I do agree, the SNP are playing a dangerous game. But no when it comes to Oil. Whatever your views on Scotland 'losing the confidence' of UK Investors can quite easily be scaled up to the UK losing the confidence of global investors due to Brexit, yet we're happy to take that risk.

I'll get one fabbed up soon. Logosol dont offer one for this Mill.

I understand Jap Whisky is taking off, I really dont see it taking the place of Scottish Single Malts, English, Welsh and Irish Whiskey/Whisky have their market share and have done so for years and have hardly made a dent in Scottish Whisky. But I qualified my stance by stating that we should not expect that demand to increase or remain in fashion indefinitely. If they did their sums when crude was at its peak and never budgeted for a periodic slump then they are as good at maths as I am. The only poor sods who invest in start-ups have money to lose. High risk investments are just that. In what way does Norway have a different agenda? Thats ridiculous. Scotland would very much like to have the same agenda. Norway is planning on running these new platforms for the next 40 years. That's another 40 years from first oil. Can you imagine where Scotland would be in 40 years if we did the same? We dont just have the North sea, we're surrounded by untapped oil reserves. There is nothing at all stopping an independent Scotland also being an 'Oil Company', Aberdeen is after all the 'Oil Capital' of Europe. But although the Government have a controlling share in Statoil (now Equinor) thats not the only Oil Company operating. Conoco Philips, BP, Lundin, Shell, ENI and a load of others all operate and make a profit working off the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Thats paying vasty greater wages to the Employee's, upholding much higher standards off-shore and paying a load in tax to the Government. There is nothing you can say regarding how Norway runs its Oil Reserves that cant just as easily be applied to Scotland. I simply do not believe that. Im sure you can show me plenty of links backing this up but I simply do not believe it. If Norway can do it Scotland can too. There is no way the same oil companies are paying much more in tax to Norway yet plead poverty in the UK and dont have to pay the same. The investment will not go, because they are still investing heavily in Norway drilling the same shelf and extracting the same oil. All with higher operating costs. It plays far to much into Westminsters hands to make the Oil Industry seem unprofitable and waning. They have done this from day 1. Released Labour documents highlight this. Far too many fall for it.

But its not included in Scotland GDP as far as Im aware? Its only one thing off the top of my head. There is bound to be other things like this. I dont buy into that nor do I think we should rely on Whisky remaining popular forever, even if currently its increasing in popularity year on year. We'll have to. As long as Norway is building more and more Platforms in this market, in the same sea, your opinion is invalid. It really is a sink or swim market just now, or was. I did mention serious cut backs where needed and implemented during the depth of the down turn. If your mates company could not keep afloat, like loads of others they close down. Its all about streamlining just now and will continue to be. We're busier than ever right now installing new wells. Flat out. But in Norway of course.

Logosol dont have a winch for my Mill but I do intend on getting one fabricated up. Well, getting the local Smiddy to do it for me. My Mill Trailer has the ability to add another 2 Sidewinders on. But Im planning on using one of these mounts to house a Socket that will take a Winch much like your design. Just not got around to it yet and when I popped past he was on Holiday.

Im sorry but I do not agree with this assessment in the slightest. Ive explained in another thread why OPEC started the latest Oil Crisis and it was purely to do with Fracking in the US and OPECS desire to squash it. They opened the flood gates and the price dropped through the floor. OPECS intention of bankrupting the Frackers almost worked but in the end OPEC blinked first, they could not sustain giving the oil away at that price so they closed the taps in a little. In the meantime Oil Companies and Oil Service companies tightened their belts and heavily reduced operating costs. Break even per barrel is still the lowest in OPEC Countries but we're not far behind now. Now, it would be much more difficult to argue my point against you where it not for Norway and Denmark operating in the very same North Sea. In Norway we have 2 weeks off-shore 4 week off rotations almost across the board. We even have Women doing 50% of this 2 weeks off-shore and 8 weeks off due to maternity leave. I work less than 150 days a year for significantly more than I would earn in the UK Sector where I was working 250 days a year. We have Single Man Cabins, free Silver and Knives at the Clubs, Bingo with free Ipads etc every week, Steak twice a week yet Norway is still making huge profits. In the UK Sector you're lucky to get a packet of Digestives. Norway is building more and more Platforms and their shiny new Platforms are state of the art. Yet their costs are low and show no intention of slowing down. Its simply the Politics of the UK massaging the numbers to make us believe that Oil in the UK sector is dead. What your mates told you simply does not tally up with the huge expansion in Norway. Where Scotland to see the same expansion right now the demand for Indi#2 would be through the roof. Keeping a lid on our reserves has been the best trick Westminster has in controlling us. Its almost been running out for the last 40 years. There is loads of reserves left in the North Sea, the Irish Sea and West of Shetland. But I guess your mate knows best.... Your assessment of Scotch Whisky is also laughable. Whiskey sales booming as demand surges - Chinadaily.com.cn WWW.CHINADAILY.COM.CN Demand from the increasingly urbanized and high-income population, evolving tastes and consumption upgrade is...

Hand balled another oak into the Mill today. Gotta stop doing it this way before I lose my legs! ?

It might be almost insurmountable to move it outside of Scotland. Where else in the UK is there such deep Fjord-like 'firths'? The Clyde is the deepest at 164m. But then maybe the UK should be much more grateful that we house it for them? Not just a token 'thank you' but an entire step-change away from seeing Scotland as a parasite on the UK, it does piss many people off. Im not sure how much revenue having it where it is actually brings? Some for sure, but I feel not that much. But its just another reason in my mind why Westminster is petrified about losing its control of Scotland. Id have to look on-line again as regards the blocking of the development of the Oil Fields in the Firth of Clyde and Scotland's portion of the Irish Sea. A quick google brought this interesting article up; WWW.BUSINESSFORSCOTLAND.COM The Scottish Government has confirmed that oil exploration off south-west Scotland could go ahead post-independence... Did MoD block oil boom in the Firth of Clyde? - Sunday Post WWW.SUNDAYPOST.COM A potential North Sea-style oil boom off the Ayrshire coast was blocked by worried defence chiefs, a former MP has claimed.

I don’t think its the SNP’s main reasoning. But having the UK’s Nuclear deterrent placed on the Clyde it means most of Scotland would be wiped out where it to be attacked likewise. I see the reasoning for having it where it is, low population density, deep water etc. But is it right a country that seems to want completely rid of Trident has it forced on them? Personally I think it’s ludicrous to get rid of Trident. But I do think Scotland should have a say if we have to continue to house it. And if we opened up the Oil Fields there I think it would invigorate the whole coast. So denying the West Coast this Oil Boom, and revenue then to continue to call Scotland a financial drain is a slap in the face really.
-
Im in the North East and although I want independence I dont want the SNP dystopian version of it. I think the Oil industry plays a large part in the East Coast voting for the Tories and happy to remain in the Union. Now, where Trident forced to leave the Clyde the numerous Oil Fields that could be opened as the result could turn Glasgow or indeed the West Coast into a second Aberdeen/East Coast in regards to prosperity.
