  1. He probably has a point, althou the fact he only has 1 person on his show and his guests views echo his own could be a tad hypocrical, as that's wot he's accusing main stream media/government off, rolling out pet experts. Esp as the 'expert' isnae actually an expert but a journo, to be fair to him he does sound like he knew his stuff and had done his research but that is not normally the case. I know I'm a shooter ( althou with a degree in conservation) but the amount of times u get a proper respected professor quoting scientific studies about managing ( culling/killing) 1 animal to protect other rare/vulnerable animals and end up debating with some numpty like brain badger may who just comes out with a lot off emotional drivel but it's wot the public and media want to hear. I do think UK has a massive problem with social media and tiny vocal minorites really pushing there agenda's. Look at these vegans I think 5% of population but have somehow convinced a lot off folk and esp brainwashed media that it is somehow greener and better for the environment than eating meat. WTF!! I could understand it if they were living off tatties, carrots and neeps as there staples. But don't see many soya fields growing in Scotland. The carbon footprint on there 'green' environmentally friendly food must be horrendous. How much native habitat has been ploughed for fields of soya? Be interesting to see how they get on now if imports are restricted? My internet dropped out so missed the end but up till then he never offered any alternative methods of managing this virus, don't have a problem with folk critising but I do think u also need to have an alternative solution, not just poke holes in someone else's solution. But the debate should be heard in a reasonable way, and numpty's shaming other folk n Facebook snae that
  2. I think u just need to apply a bit ofcommon sense where u can. But thats us just over 2 weeks in, god knows how long it's going to last. But it won't be over quickly, or not quickly enough. While I understand this need for isolation intially it is just not sustainable long term ( possibly if government had got its finger out months ago when it started spreading out off China, it might never have came in) but the government simply can't afford to pay 80% off the countries wage for that long. The exit strategy most likely will be to encourage younger healthier people to catch it ( when hospitals are not full to bursting) so they build up some sort off immunity to it when the more vulnerable/higher risk folk emerge from there 3 month isolation. There mibbee was a good chance they never started lockdown sooner was to let it spread about a bit, not a lot off point n folk in northern areas in lockdown when virus only really present in london. Was speaking to a lad who's Mrs works at local hospital and said it's pretty empty so far, touch wood My sites got shut down last Fri so had a week of work after the lock down, so better than many but had a week off now, can't see it opening very quickly even after this. Lot of forestry workers/machines sitting idle the now despite being classed as a key industry. Think I'm probably going to have to look elsewhere for work in the short term.
  3. If this lasts a month I'd be surprised if harvesters still running, unless cutting purely biomass.. Most up my way have parked up already, And a few forestry companies have banned chainsaws full stop in there woods, reason is to save NHS if an accident by time u have air ambo or mountain rescue to get u out plus the bed at far end. U may be lucky but a lot of cutters are sitting at home the now and only get worse if mills not selling timber, building trade/timber yards all shut down up here.
  4. Does bs tell u specs?? I thought it was just to tell materials where up to standard. Not something I've ever looked up or bothered with. Thankfully never been asked to put a ground barb on To be honest I think I'd refuse to put barb on at ground level, lost count the number of times ripped my hands open finding buried barb. A real pet hate off mine and completely piontless
  5. Cheers Matthew. Aye that's how I use box stays, once every decade or so, can usually get them tight even hand digging with tie backs/downs or stuff nailed to strainer bottom. Even in peaty ground I'd rarely need to put a box stay in. Just in a lot off those photos u see on here a lot have box stays wondered if it was an English/regional thing?? With box strainers in the photos they look the same size as the normal fence posts, mibbee a visual illusion thou. Nice height off stays there Matthew, half the stays u see nowadays are doing more harm than good. There is an old fencer in the next valley up stays are halfway down ur shin, if does look strange but u could play a tune on his fences that tight and tidy.
  6. Why do all the photos have box/NZ style stay's?? Is it a new thing or been common for years down south? Also do u just use normal sized fence posts for the 2nd post? The rare times ive done them it was a small turning strainer, so makes them dear and slow. 1st time I'd ever seen or done them was in NZ 20 odd years ago and only ever seen them done by others who have been to kiwi. 1 local fencer does them as standard but again learned in NZ, but no one else uses them locally If ur using it for post and rail u'll obviously need to have ur post set up spot on to catch the rails, but is it not a problem with posts twisting? Can be a bugger to twist straight once post well in. Dig Dan, it's instead off a traditional stay, it's anchoring the horizontal high up to base of strainer so strainer top shouldn't move when u start pulling wire.
  7. I would lmagine it has been sorted out by now, almost 6yrs later. Ignoring any legal liabilities, if he's taking the timber then it will be theft unless he has permission.
  8. I would imagine Callum will be right if ur only looking for a few pieces or even parts of tonne. Will be loads of wee stacks all over the woods. U used to be able to buy a gleaming ticket of FC which meant u were allowed to scavenge all these piles. Are u also experimenting with different species off tree? Can imagine that might make a big difference to structural strengths esp on such small dia timber.
  9. U can also use round up/Glyco earlier on in growth cycle. They also say bruising is better than cutting and have even heard off nature reserves/sssi's getting volanteers n to get t with stocks. They reckon that by rolling/bruising the way it breaks the stem means it can't seal itself like it can with cutting so bleeds more and weakens it more. I have also been told it doesn't work too,by some who have tried it, not sure if not been done enough. Think u need to do it 2 times a year and over a few years for it too work. As the scientsts do claim it should work ( which doesn't mean much really) I always thought of welding up a bracken buster dong some work like that but just not sure how well it works
  10. I'd mibbee be careful putting fliers throu doors at the time for fear of spreading any virus about. Might be better don't something on faceache or the like I know if someone put a flier throu my olds door I would not be happy with them being a vulnerable age. Times are going to be very tuff for a lot off folk, my work was cancelled on Fri until further notice despite it being passed as a key industry.
  11. I get the social distancing thing, and it's definitely the right thing to do at the moment. But how sustainable long term is it?? As this will be going on for months and months, folks mental health will start to be affected plus country will be bankrupt along with many other countries. I don't know many true facts about it but 1 is the vast majority 80%+ will catch it and for the vast majority it will be just minor symptoms. There was a proper real expert on radio 2 the other day saying we need an exit strategy to come out off lock down. So if we on purpose infected large numbers in a controlled environment ( butlins, centre PARC's or rural hotels) u could essentially lead a holiday lifestyle with a couple of shitty days, have access to a nurse if needed. But just with lock down ur not spreading it as everyone wil be infected but atleast u know ur infected. So when lock down comes to an end a far higher % will have some immunity to it. With Foot and Mouth they designated clean and 'dirty' staff, obviously dirty if been on infected farms. With the above idea ud effectively have dirty areas and could have a 'dirty' nurse ( that would make me want to catch it alone, twice and I have asthma ) and anyone needing extra care could be taken to a 'dirty' hospital or even set up small areas for monitoring the worse affected
  12. My sympathies to the 2 off u. Now I understand the reason for a lock down and flattening the curve etc, but every time a lock down period ends u will have spikes off infection again in cycles until enough folk have had it so it can't spread so easily. I also imagine half the bother with this virus is the symptoms are so mild that many folk may not know they have it or may be contagious even before they have the symptoms. Bottom line almost all off us are going to catch it at some point just a matter off when. Would it not be an idea to get some volanteers, youngish and healthy with no known illnesses, to be given the disease then go into a 'quaratine' type area even say now empty hotel or butlns. So because everyone there potentially has it there really is not the need for the lock down to the same extent. Infact u pretty much could have a party if u wanted to or a wee holiday with the Mrs if both healthy etc. U don't need this social distancing either. 2 weeks later u'd be free to go back to work and behave normally which also helps this herd immunity. And get the next batch in. Even the hotel/butlins wouldn't need to be constantly disenfected/deep cleaned as everyone there is infected anyway, atleast until the end. Just going to cost an absolute fortune and dragon for a long long time
  13. Was there not a husky felling balloon type thing from the old days. 70s or 80s I'm guessng I think u attached it to the exhaust and it inflated and pushed tree over. Must admit I'm too young to mind it but have heard odd tales from some off the old timers. Lot off cash when still not going to do the worst off the trees. Aye ur right Avant when they can reach them, but how long will that be allowed?? If it even is still allowed now?? To be honest the best thing is having the time and being able to pick the days u go to different jobs as wind is the best felling aid u can get, and free. A nice wee northly today, which is unusual for here, went to 2 different jobs to use it. Doesnae usually work like that thou.
  14. Cheers, good to know. With the Freeman's ur back to cutting a cubby hole at back of tree again. I remember at last summer's forestry show, speaking to da Hughes reckoned his ratchet wedge things were pretty good Just expensive for a trial to know if up to ur job.
  15. Wot's it like on big hairy outsider Sitka or Norway thou, talking things with a 3 or 4ft+ butt and leaning and wieghted over the boundry?? I doubt it would go high enough to push them in. Must admit had a swearing session today bloody jack popped out, ugly twin stemmer tree was well well over wind stopped and the high lift I had for back up just sort of got compressed in to the tree, bloody lucky the hinge held as came back with some force Going to get a local welder to weld a better grippy plate that will change angles to
  16. I would say out has done more research than me. But do u not run it of lift with the ratchet/wedge type?? Don't like like they lift that high. I ran out with the bottle Jack the other day, and slot was tight ( nudge nudge, wink wink) don't get me wrong stem was leaning well over but still standing as very heavy wieghted the wrong way, didn't take much to wedge over from there. I'm sure a lot safer than wedging dead trees esp ash but winching might be a safer option. Is there not a bracket to hold ur drill and u pull trigger using a rope.
  17. Most forestry cutters will just buy a 20t bottle Jack and weld a big plate for the top, sub 100 quid. There meant to be very good, but they are expensive. A lot extra to pay on ur cutting wage, yet to hear a contractor pay extra for u having 1 The 1 problem with bottle jack's is the wieght, take a bit off carrying to the top of a hill but I imagine so will a mechanical wedge and drill. Would u also be happy using drill in heavy rain, there not cheap either Must admit relatively new to jacking trees but it is bloody brilliant. Althou u do need to carry ur sledge and wedges too, which is a shame. But until now I done wot everyone else has done for decades, wedged or ideally waited for the right wind to blow trees in, by far the easiest way.
  18. While I agree with many it's completely overblown mountain over a molehill. Do 30k folk not die off flu every year in Europe? Never really thought it would affect forestry work, esp not so quickly, 1 or 2 men on a site in middle off nowhere. 1 company put the harvesters on a quota, and not a very big quota either, worried they won't be able to sell produce. Not good, I'd be surprised if enough to make payments on £750k worth off equipment per site ( assuming a just 1 newish harvester and forwarder) A lot off folk could be infor a tough time, and not throu actual illness
  19. In forestry it is the norm, very few companies will take u on without seeing ur tickets. The company u work for are meant to forward on ur tickets to the forestry owners/managers before ur even allowed to start a saw on there land. And still forest managers will ask for ur tickets. Must admit I've lost my newest photo I'd card but still got a few previous cards, plus got a new ticket/card due shortly so I'll soon be up to date again.
  20. I have got the local Raynet number wrote down, but must admit I never like bothering folk too much. But I will give them a bell. The reason I want a cb is most forwarder/harvesters already have CB sets in them, so I can go on to almost any site and have contact with the operators. And probably both/all operators on site, the other week the lad I was speaking too was on opposite side of hill, while a different driver was just below me, would off made more sense speaking to him. So really need something comparable with cb's With a normal 2 way u have to waste time morning/night chasing after the other handset to charge or if ur off to a different site. Which usually means walking up a steep hill somewhere, not wot u want after a hard day. Cheers for the replies
  21. Rough hewn I've picked me up wrong At both 325 and 3/8's husky run on 1.5mm bar groove and Stihl at 1.6mm, so got 4 chain types in those 2 pitches was thinking about either putting either 3/8' s Pico/Low Profile ( basically climbing saw chain, 3/8s but only 1.3mm guage instead off 1.5 or 1.6mm) or this new husky 325 X cut ( not sure if it's 1.1 or 1.3 mm guage, but runs on a standard 325 sprocket) chain on everything under 70cc. Heard of a few boys running the small chain basically climbing saw chain on 70 cc saws with 18 or 20 bars and loving it as cuts so fast on soft woods Both chains are narrower than ur normal Not sure if u get husky bars for 3/8"s P or even if the same guage? Or if u can get a Stihl comparable bar to suit husky X cut chain? I'm sick off the wall off chains too. Fine when there on the wall all in order it's when u find them at the bottom off ur piece bag, wedge bag, petrol can tub or saw tub and a hundred other places I leave them for safe keeping before I hang them up on wall again, which I usually forget about. Esp when part worn and the numbers are worn of drive links. Got a pile soaking in a an oil bath the now, just went a bit tight wi rust must of been lying bunched up wet in some corner, see if it works never done it before
  22. I've used it fair bit on larch jobs similar to spuds. Not a lot else u can do dropping single trees surrounded by others. Personally i hate it, it does work well but it can be bloody dangerous. Ok on smaller stuff but when u get into big stuff can be a bit hairy at times. Esp when the tree is more vertical and it just sits down on ur cut and doesn't move, wieght/friction must hold it there. Handy have a wee rope or long felling bar so u can push the tree from a distance Edit Or worse ur saw gets trapped in cut, when tree goes good chance ur saw is going to be squashed esp if play it safe and keep ur distance, so ur in closer trying to save ur saw. Not 1 for beginners
  23. Alright. I realise with ur standard 325 and 3/8s pitch chain ur Stihl and husky run on different gauges so need different chain reels/loops. Was just wondering with ur smaller chain pitches can u run them on both stihl and husky saws? I have a couple of smaller saws of 3/8's Pico chain and all 1.3mm guage ( 2 stihls, efco and solo climbing saw) but no huskies. Thinking off dropping any I have on 325 down to 3/8's Pico or possibly even the new 325 Pico/husky X cut if I can get bars for Stihl saws. Or can u get 3/8's Pico for huskies? Few boys running that new 325 X cut on 572s and 20" bars and saw it really rips but a bugger to sharpen. Not tried it yet Just so i can start making my own loops, at moment running 5 different types of chain. Just a pain really Would be handy to have as many on the same chain type as possible. Cheers

  25. I have an A frame set up on my Argo, I'd guess designed for lifting reds in. Was on it when I bought it. Have to admit I've just man handled any in, not that I deal with many reds. With a trailer ucould just have the a frame against front of trailer and then winch it upright, I'd have the deer on a 2nd pulley so u can lower itby hand easily
