  1. There's an element of truth in what you say but even a racing engine needs to be reliable enough to finish the race otherwise it doesn't matter how fast it is. If Husqvarna really have built a saw solely to look good on the sales literature with no thought or concern for the longevity of the engine or cost to the consumer then that's a pretty poor show IMO. What you're saying illustrates the futility of quoting performance figures as an indicator that saw A is superior to saw B, not that anyone would do such a thing I do agree that no machine is perfect and no manufacturer is immune to releasing something more troublesome than it should be. I'm not pointing the finger only at Husqvarna, they do and have made very good saws.
  2. Fair enough, that certainly puts things in a different light, not good especially if the dealers/manufacturers don't care.
  3. I would have done the same to be honest, £30? it isn't worth the grief trying for a fix under warranty and the time without the saw. These things happen, everything (regardless of brand) is made to certain tolerances, get one on the limit and you may have a problem plus the consumer wants more power and less weight and this may be the result, that said the new clutch could last for years. Just the way it is
  4. £30, not bad really, how old is the saw?
  5. That's a whole lot of saw for the money, nice
  6. What about a Goretex or eVent mountaineering jacket? ticks all the boxes such as helmet compatible hood, harness compatible pockets and cut to be unrestrictive when climbing. I use an old Montane Venture (eVent) myself and recently picked up a Karrimor Alpiniste jacket (eVent) for around £80.
  7. Well I could suggest a Timberpro Backpack blower as I've just bought one and well it does what it supposed to but........ In this case I'm sure I'd have been happier with an Echo PB-580 (58cc - 96.6m/sec) or a Stihl BR350 (63cc - 75m/sec) for £200 odd more. The Timberpro feels a bit fragile and the stop switch wasn't fitted correctly on mine, I had to open up the control handle and sort it. It also doesn't go straight from choke on to choke off when cold starting, needs a bit of playing around with the choke first and they recommend a 40-1 mix so that's an extra fuel can. Having said that it does work fine and I'm sure they don't all need fettling from new as my 5-1 combi polesaw/trimmer, also Timber pro is fine but obviously not Echo/Stihl/Husqvarna quality which you wouldn't expect at the price. So don't automatically rule out Timberpro but understand that it'll need a bit more care, chucking it around won't do it any favours, I'm pretty careful with tools and such so I'm sure it'll be fine. (Would still be happier with an Echo)
  8. Get them running and clean them up, they were undoubtedly quality saws back in the day. They'll have a value to someone, worst case scenario you have two nice vintage saws in your workshop and you can stick them in your tax return or use the powerhead to make a chainsaw winch if they're slow revving but torquey
  9. Cheers Dan, not looking for one at present but in time who knows, do you reckon the Rock is worth getting if time is plentiful and money short?
  10. Hi Dan, is this the grinder you have? Rock Machinery Original 13hp Stump Grinder
  11. Why not get somebody like Palletline to pick it up and deliver it to you, should be about £50. You can get an online quote if you know the sellers postcode.
  12. I didn't get a spanner with mine, I'll have a look and see what it needs. I'm intending getting the belts locally too.
  13. I tie a rope to the ladder rack, run it through a snatch block fitted where the drawbar fits on the chipper and run the rope through it to another snatch block clipped to the Trailer, 2-1 mechanical advantage, I pull the rope and wife guides it up 2 scaffold planks. Cheers, I'll get that sorted, need to measure the belts and order a couple. What tool do you mean to spin the drum?
  14. There are things you can claim for but the advice I got from my accountant was not to try to be clever, if what you're claiming for is obviously business related fine, if it isn't and HMRC need to ask then you've just drawn attention to yourself. Consider the actual value of what you're claiming for, if it's pence and isn't immediately obvious how it related to the business ask yourself if it's worth risking being called for an audit. Keep accurate records, HMRC will take what they're due and give you back what you're due, try to be clever and you're asking for grief. All IMO of course
  15. Thanks, I'm happy enough so far, like you I can hire something bigger if I need it. I'm not saying it's any better than other machines with similar spec, they're all much of a muchness from what I can see, just different layout or engines but I guess Briggs & Stratton are as good as say Lifan, Loncin etc, I imagine Honda engines are a step up but you can buy a Honda Engine for @£600. Pricewise only MDL are more competitive if you buy from the UK, I had to pay an extra £95 for delivery on mine but still ok.
  16. Hi, well I managed to get some footage of the Venom chipper today, mainly Ash and a couple of pieces of Hawthorn. In the end we cleared all the brash from the pile in the clip plus 2 smaller piles of again mainly Ash and ended up with the trailer filled to the bottom of the mesh sides . I'll post the video below but 1st I need to warn you about; 1st. The poor image quality 2nd. The iffy sound quality and last but by no means least, The constant use of the non-word Ahh/Umm. Public terrors holds no speaking for me LOL [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dORudLaXkxI[/ame]
  17. I'll be taking it to where I was working this week to clear up the rest of the brash, all Ash and Sycamore this time. Will try to get some footage and put it on Youtube.
  18. I couldn't justify 3-4K either as I'm just getting started and the trailer was purchased on Tuesday. I could have gone for a used chipper but getting a 2nd hand anything in N.I. is nigh on impossible. I'm intending using it commercially but as a sole trader it isn't going to be in daily use so should be ok. In the end the engine should be fine and the chipper unit is basically 2 blades on a rotor driven by V belts and a fixed anvil, assuming the rotor is balanced and it doesn't shake itself to bits there's only the bearings which I suppose I could replace with quality ones before the current ones fall apart. If it falls apart C'est La Vie.
  19. I was initially going for an MDL 15hp Chipper , a bit cheaper and had the delivery price from them last Friday but didn't get the e-mail until after work and when I phoned on Monday the last one had been sold. Had to pay a bit more for the Venom. Strangely the MDL and Venom were the only 2 I came across that had the engine under the hopper/chute rather than sitting between the hooper and chute like the Greenmech CS100 etc. I noticed it didn't like too much small, light stuff, predictably by the time you're down to the rubbish there are no decent branches left to carry the rest through, I learned very quicky to save some nice branches Out of curiosity what is it that they don't like about spruce? too resinous?
  20. A couple of guys I worked with done the Cape Wrath Trail a few months ago when the factory we worked in shut and we all got made redundant, another mate went camping up the West Coast on his 650 V Strom to re-supply them, he's currently in Morocco on the V Strom and heading back to Europe on an open ended camping trip. I started treework
  21. Just had this delivered today, a Venom 13hp Chipper from Rock Machinery. 13hp Briggs & Stratton 420cc engine, electric and pull start (battery supplied) max branch diameter 85mm approx, the usual chipper unit with 2 double sided blades and a single fixed anvil. Dimension taken from their ebay listing are Max. length: 231 cm Max. height: 150 cm Max. width: 80 cm Weight: 171.5 kgs The drawbar and handle are removable and it'll just fit through the side door of my garage. I gave it a try out today on Scots Pine brash from a job this week and it seems to work fine. It doesn't like small cuttings as the don't drop down to the rotor so I started saving some long bushy branches to help clear it. It definitely cuts down the amount of work getting rid of brash, I had to take everything from the site, hand loaded and unloaded to and from the trailer which is pretty labour intensive. I still have a pile of Ash and Sycamore brash to chip so I curious to see how it manages. So far I'm very pleased with it, I had expected it to feel a bit lightweight but the hopper and chute are at a guess 1.5mm - 2mm and the chipper housing and frame are probably 3mm-4mm so it feels pretty durable to me. I haven't measured it so will update as and when. All in cost including delivery to N.I. was £1644 so can't complain.
