  1. Only passed my tickets on Friday but during the course I was putting down a few and the assessors were impressed with my speed. I guess after a few weeks I'll have a better idea how quickly I can work.
  2. I live with my partner who luckily earns good money but I'd like to be able to contribute more, I'm kind of stuck in the need to earn money but don't want to be doing it for nothing kind of situation.
  3. Right now I'm travelling an 80 mile return journey to work, just got my 30/31 tickets but it's mainly coppice woods I'm cutting and want to cut so over 380mm is quite rare for me. I understand the olden days of good money are gone but it's got to be worth doing. I'm thinking tha at £80 a day is going to be a good basic rate even after deducting travel and wear and tear.
  4. Yeah I had two which both detonated at around 40k miles and a friend had the same problem. They have a 1.3 diesel that's to powerful and kills itself. If you can find the larger Diesel engines I believe they are ok.
  5. Stay away from combo vans. The best vans in that size I had had are the older vw caddy vans, a little tight to sleep in but great vans. Also Astra vans are great.
  6. The quickest way would be to find a local firm with a wide belt sander to out them through for a couple of quid If not then as above some electric sanders and patience.
  7. Thanks, I guess running it back in can't hurt and if it's an issue with the saws then it should be a cheap fix
  8. Thanks the saw says use he decomp every start but as you say it seems to start better without the valve in
  9. I had a quick search through but couldn't find a great deal. I have a three week old 550xp and have about 15 tanks through it so far. But it's suffering from mainly hot start issues, sometimes needing 10-15 cranks to get it to fire. Makes no real difference using decomp button or not. I know the early ones of these had issues, just wondering wether to run it back to fr jones for a check over and maybe carb reset? Also I have read a few things about exhaust mods improving running on these but can't find a definitive guide. Thanks
  10. Thanks for that it's a great response. I need to find the work and agree some pricing hopefully, with a 2 he round trip each day and fuel for the saw £80 doesn't go far.
  11. Just doing mine, it's been really good. Instructor is a top guy which makes it all the better, just do some research before you go and listen. They won't let you do any thing dangerous and should you all you need.
  12. I have some experience in the woods with dragging and burning, post peeling and fence making just need to get into it more and earn the right sort of money.
  13. If I was a lottery winner I'd think of other things to be doing I'm sure 😜 I currently live my partner, she earns good money from her work but it would nice to not be scratching around for money all the time. It seems a long time since I have earns over £80 a day, or when jobs in the smoke came up for £200 a day, gone are the old days of good money. I'm really keen to get into forest work and work as hard as possible I just don't want to do myself out of money that I could be earning.
  14. I'm self employed, £80 doesn't sound bad to me using own fuel and maybe an 8-5 day or something?
  15. Have been doing work for a few forest guys previously and travelled between 25-40 miles each way to job sites, done some long days and some short but only saw £50 a day. I am just doing my 30/31 tickets and fingers crossed the following week I should be passed and ready to go, I'm wondering what sort of rate I can I try and get? I know it's going to take a while to pick up my speed but I will be taking into account travel, using my fuel and oil and wear on the saw. Thanks folks.
  16. I use milk paints on all my bowls. Either home made or powder form.
  17. A little gas solder iron would do the trick. Not sure you can get any phone line connectors, off the top of my head there's 6/7 separate cables inside.
  18. Providing the phone cable is connected like for like there shouldn't be any issues and the same with the TV line. Providing you can get good connections and solder them all should be fine.
  19. These two just finished drying out from oiling and need some new homes.
  20. Tried calling some conservatory company's? When they strip old ones to replace they often remove the clear plastic roofing and skip it. But you may be able to take it off there hands
  21. Red dwarf in the woods hey? Maybe I better avoid that look. Had a look at the stihl online but not read anything about them yet.
  22. Hey guys I picked up a cheap helmet a while back to use but it's bad, pulls hair out in chunks and the fit is bad. Looking at the husky hats but confused between the models? Anybody have any advice or is it a case of trying them on? Thanks
  23. Not open bank holiday Monday are you guys?
  24. I have been a full time maker/seller for just about two years now Dan. Aswell as turned stuff I make spoons and furniture, but the best thing is to make a bowl and use it or see others using them.
