  1. quote:No, this isn't what happens in every other industry. Take the electronics sector in the UK. In the 1990s there were two silicon foundries in the UK, one in Scotland, the other in the North East. They underpinned a substantial electronics industry making devices such as mobile phones. The cost of manufacture in the Far East was so much lower that they couldn't compete and shut down, along with the entire supply chain. It has gone completely for consumer electronics and has largely gone in Europe (Danfoss are moving out too now) and we simply import electronic goods. Unquote. It didn't turn a profit so they shut it down, why weren't they subsidised? or the ship building industry? or the coal mining industry etc. etc. If my business falls on hard times will I be subsidised:confused1:
  2. I just don't get it, I understand folks saying farmers are struggling but its hard to know what's actually going on, when I think of a poor farmer I thing of some soaking wet, frozen dishevelled bloke on a massey 35, round here they all drive spanking New Hollands, no cleaning out the dung with a shovel as they have a JCB 409, He has the latest Defender, wife drives a new Discovery, etc etc.
  3. Bollox I just cut up two grand's worth of bespoke garden furniture:blushing:
  4. also thought totally unrelated, a local prick who's from a now defunct farming family is throwing up sheds left right and centre (no planning permission needed) because he has a herd number, and he has no cattle, sheep, pigs or anything. Ah the benefits of being a farmer:confused1::confused1:
  5. this is all getting a bit confusing to me (not being a farmer) but if there are so many struggling farmers and farming is so critical to our economy, surely they should just sell their land to a farmer who can make it profitable? that's what happens in every other industry:confused1:
  6. Can anyone explain the whole subsidised farming thing? Not being a farmer or from farming stock I don't know much about it. Is it a case of getting financial help if your farm is in trouble? What are the conditions of that help?
  7. not only Nigeria, but another giveaway is the fact that your doing the selling AND the paying! Don't suppose I can transfer the £415 from my paypal account into my current account?
  8. do a fair bit of selling on gumtree and thought i'd seen every scam in the book until this. Had an old RD350 exhaust in the shed so decided to sell it as part of the spring clean. This is how the email communication went from a Mr Greg Cambel... Hi do you have bike parts for sale? Yes I have an RD350 exhaust for sale. Great! please consider it sold and I want you to remove the advert as I am willing to pay you the full asking price because I need to buy it for my cousin asap, I have read through the advert and i'm totally satisfied with it. Unfortunately I would not be able to come personally to collect due to my hearing loss and i'm just recovering from heart surgery so i'm house bound. I have a courier agent that would help me to pick it up at your preferred location after you have received your money and i'll pay you via Paypal once your ready. Kindly get back to me with your location so that I can inform the courier agent about it now? will do, my paypal email is xxxxxx, address is xxxxxxxxxxx. I'll have it wrapped up for the courier, what address is it going to? Thanks In order to avoid mistakes could you confirm the exact amount please? £100 Ok that's fine, I will make the payment now and I will email you once I have done it. Hello again, I am glad to inform you that I have made the payment! Paypal said that they have sent you a confirmation email so kindly check the inbox of your email. I had a problem with the courier agent, they said they can only schedule the pickup date and time after they receive the pickup fee in their head office via moneygram, but due to my health condition i'm unable to get to a moneygram shop to send it. I added the £275 they charged for the pickup and £40 for the moneygram charges, you will receive the total sum of £415. You'll send £275 to them via moneygram today ('today' in blue underlined text indicating a link) and here is the details needed for the transfer below. First name: Shope Last name: Lade City: Ibadan, 20001 Country: Nigeria Please let me know once you've sent the money so that I can make necessary arrangements. Any I received an email from [email protected] saying 'You have received a Paypal payment of £415.00 GBP sent from Greg Cambel. checked it and it's a genuine notification from Paypal. However when I log into my paypal account the status of the transaction is 'Status: Pending 98% complete .awaiting moneygram paymeny. Very crafty!
  9. what you reckon folks? £170 for a 242xp in good running condition?
  10. quick question, I just took down a fairly large willow in one garden and a load of conifer in the neighbouring garden, all must be removed and I was thinking i'll process it and throw the logs into my personal log store. However I have a few large conifer jobs on and will no doubt get more as the year runs on, too much for me to burn so question is would you process and sell willow and conifer once seasoned?
  11. now if it was a highly prized black walnut..........
  12. I too am toying with making a retort, though mine won't be mobile as I would like to use the heat to dry logs, a key point in my design is having a removable inner chamber to cut down on down time while cooling, theory is if you have three 'canisters' you could have one in the retort, one loaded with new wood ready to go, and one cooling, it means you don't need to start a new fire every burn, just re-stoke the fire every time you change the canister. My theory is once the routine is in full swing I can load a new canister and stoke the fire, leaving the old canister to cool, empty and refill the previous canister, then head off to work in the morning, swing round by the yard on my way home (which I do most days anyway to unload/load up for the next day) stoke the fire, swop out canisters, empty and reload cooled canister, come back the next morning and start the cycle over again. Having a removable ash pan means you can empty it while the fire is still burning. You would need a front loader with forks or similar handler but it would be easy enough with a couple of toe lugs welded to the top of each canister and under the ash pan. All just theory.
  13. Am trying to prise a 242 off a guy, some good deals on new saws and you get a bit of warranty, but given the reputation of the 242, I reckon it would out last any new 40cc saw.
  14. when you say active nests do you mean one that's being built, or one that has eggs in it?
  15. been asked to quote a beech reduction but there are a couple of crow nests in it, whats the law on crows?
  16. not sure what to say chuck, you get what you pay for, but then I know people who have bought cheap Chinese junk and it's lasted years, I also know folk who bought top quality saws and have had nothing but bad luck. Personally I don't believe in bad saws, just bad expectations of what a saw will do, based on the kind of work you described, big trees and all, I would have gone for a good quality used saw myself.
  17. Hey folks there is a Makita 9010 on the local gumtree, looks pretty fresh with a 3ft bar, if its a torque monster as described earlier would it make a good milling saw for small to mid sized timber?
  18. I've had a couple of husky 36's, including one I pulled out of a skip, great little saw for a 'not real husky'. But then I bought a 142:thumbdown: how does the 42 compare?
  19. yeah thought that myself, they may be good but are they that good?
  20. ah come on just admit it, Landrovers are sh**e:001_tt2:
  21. what about this https://www.donedeal.co.uk/gardenequipment-for-sale/chainsaw-husqvarna-242xp-professional-saw/13961972
  22. Thanks for the advice guys, what are husky 240's like? Someone local selling one, says it has very little use and two new chains, he wants £120 for it?
  23. if its good enough for taxi drivers its good enough for me!
  24. hey folks need a small pruning saw and as all my saws are Husqvarna i'd like to stick with the brand as I have spare bars, chains etc, initially thought about the 435. Unfortunately the only Husky dealer within driving range is a con artist:thumbdown: So thought i'd try the Echo dealer, £520 for a cs390:thumbdown: So now i'm thinking about a second hand Husky or Echo, any recommendations, or even better has anyone got a suitable saw lying around gathering dust?
