  1. Its all the same is it rather than a rotation system? If so not much point in coppicing again? Some winter pics would be really good to see - could get more of an idea of the structure of the woodland them. Sorry I'm not being much help here, My knowledge is very limited but I'm just interestd as I'm in a similar position
  2. Thanks for the pics, interesting to see Looks like the coppice has been coppiced not so long ago?
  3. :lol:Very, very funny Silky, cheers for that:thumbup:
  4. Thanks for sharing that Steve, its nice to see
  5. I'm interested in where you were thinking of putting them Bombus? Would love to see some pics of the wood to see what space you have to play with
  6. Thanks for your thoughts Woodguy and Spandit, To my mind there are a number of problems with the leylandii. For a start there are a are a heck of a lot of them. The way they have been planted, with the intention that they line either side of the ride, has meant that the now effectively form a massive hedge. There is no longer a ride, the leylandi have overgrown it. As a consequence vehicle access to the wood is impossible. This 'hedge' also prevents light reaching one corner of the wood and is out competing more favourable species that are growing amongst it. I've been for another stroll around this afternoon and have discovered two good sized Scots that I hadn't realised were there growing among the leylandi. I'd like to give those trees space to grow. Even of I remove all the leylandi in the 'hedge' I will still have several other leylandi dotted around the wood, so I'd need to take a firm decision to eradicate it if I wanted to do so.
  7. Many thanks Woodyguy and Paul, I will attempt to get more accurate measurements of the trees and make some firm calculations. Then I'll be able to confirm if a felling licence is required or not.
  8. Yes indeed TVI, I've discovered that underestimating considerably, and then realising your error, is a wonderfully easy method of increasing the size of your woodland. The inability to estimate acreage correctly also has the added bonus (unique in my experience) of leaving you with a warm glow all over when your total failure is revealed to you by someone else. Never has personal ineptidude felt so good
  9. Oh, by the way TVI, You may want to keep in mind who you're dealing with here - Two Acres by name Five Acres by Google Earth measurement My estimations may be garbage
  10. Cheers TVI, Reckon I will need a felling licence then. I'm thinking of having all those Leylandi out, plus coppicing the very overgrown hazel. Don't really want to spread that over a year.
  11. Ok, well, I have roughly 55 Leylandi that are about 10 inches diameter and thirty years old. Maybe 25 feet tall as a guess. How many cubes is that would you say?
  12. Ah, right, I hadn't realised the quota was per calendar quarter. I also thought it was all the wood in the tree, not just the useable firewood. Why avoid grants? Is that to keep, control yourself and prevent interfering?
  13. My plans for the wood have been coming together this week and I have some developments I need advice on. We've had a family get together and everyone is happy for me to go ahead with managing the wood as I see fit What we're considering is the best ownership structure? We want to avoid the splitting endlessly into smaller and smaller fractions among descendants so are thinking of a family trust:confused1: I'm now ready to start working on a management plan. I think I will need a felling licence (plan is to fell the leylandi as a next task). I'm also wondering if there are any grants worth applying for? I've come across the Biffa grants scheme (I believe I could qualify as I am within ten miles of a landfill site). Does anyone have any experience of applying for these type of grants? Are they a good move or do they cause problems? Any advice apprectiated
  14. Diversity in bird box size/holes looks like the key to success then?
  15. My hazel is also seriously out of rotation. Am I right to think from whats been said that if I coppice it now I'll have a good crop for firewood but I may losse some stools, others will regenerate. The following crop will be useful for other purposes but won't make firewood?
  16. I agree Jon, As I'm just starting out working my woodland I'm very appreciative of all the help and advice I've had from Arbtalkers - brilliant bunch. I've had memebers come take a look at the wood and offer advice and also offers of helping me working in the wood for free
  17. Thanks for that Bombus, Do you have a source for the bird box info? Thats interesting. I'm not going to use the Glusophate at the moment - opinions on nettles seem to be divided so leave well alone at the moment is the plan.
  18. Hi Bombus, I'm in a very similar position to you with around five acres that have been untouched for around twenty years. If you search for a thread that I started called 'working neglected woodland' you may find lots of information that would interest you. I've had massive help from Arbtalkers so far, including site visits and offers to work, all for free A big thank you to all. At the stage I'm at (essentially research and planning) the best advice has been to just spend time in the wood getting to know it. Thats what I've been doing and its made a real difference to my knowledge and understanding of what I'm working with. Can we see some pictures? best of luck
  19. You should have offered to make him a nice cup of tea and a sandwich Might have had him toilet bound and out of harms way for a week
  20. But, France is about 100% bigger in land area than UK. Grmany is about 50% bigger. So both those countries have more land to play with than we do on our small island.
  21. I'm not sure if a union exists that supports arborists, but thats hat you need
  22. Thats interesting remewablejohn, how does your free drop off point work and how did you set it up?
  23. Looks great Sussex Groundie! Are you going to season your logs stacked like that in the wood?
  24. Well, you'd certainly expect him to be very, very polite wouldn't you If it were me I reckon I'd just put the damn gateposts on the pile
