  1. Looks really good Dinosaw, Better than the one i just bought I'd say
  2. Got my log pick delivered today. Jones didn't have any left when I went to order one so ordered a Helko from George Carr. Interestingly I got a Mueller instead. I'm not sure what trading standards would make of that! Seems much of a muchness to me, both 80cm. The Mueller is an ash handle instead of hickory but no worries I guess. Anyone have an opinion on Mueller for quality?
  3. Right - cheers all - thats it I've ordered the 80cm one. I'll see how it goes and if I find I need something with a little more length I can come back for a bigger one
  4. Oh dear, I can feel a new euphemisim gently entering my lexicon - 'To fill ones scabbard'
  5. Its looking like a definite 'Yes' then - F R Jones have a 80cm and a 120 cm in their clearance sale, any opinions on size?
  6. To be honest Peat up until now I've not felt the need for a picaroon or tongs. I've just been humping logs around. Never had any bother. The thing is I whacked my back on my car boot three months ago and its not been right since, getting slowly better though. As its getting towards log shed filling time of the year I'm a little concerned that the back won't take the punishment, so I'm looking for a way to lighten the load.
  7. 'five foot' - now your're just showing off Mr Idiot
  8. i'm beginning to think you must be one of our local Tory MP's in disguise Mr Idiot - I understand that kind of activity could pass as entertainment amongst the privately educated
  9. Well thats a relief! I had a rather horrible vision of a leather clad idiot staggering around a suffolk wood with an impaled appendage
  10. I wouldn't think they're bonkers but they're certainly very greedy
  11. Oh no Mr Idiot, When you say 'cocky' do you mean that you managed to use a very useful tool to render your very useful tool useless? I don't expect tat went down very well with Mrs idiot
  12. Anyone used a picaroon/ hookaroon / log pick? I see F R Jones have some Helko log picks in their clearance sale. My back is giving me a bit of grief these days and I'm wondering if it would help me with my firewood production? I'm only going to be doing about 7 cube a year out of my wood for my own use.
  13. Thans mate - I'm using 'green' blades for greenwood. The Stanley blade is supposedly for 'green' wood and it does have the traditional design I'm familiar with. It is utterly, unspeakably, useless. Its so bad that if I'd paid 10p for it I'd want my money back:thumbdown: It just wants to bend and bounce of the wood instead of biting. Imterestingly the teeth seem much larger than other blades I've used of the same size.
  14. Thanks for the advice all I didn't realise you could sharpen hardened blades. I'll go get myself a diamond file and I won't be binning that really good blade I've just finished using. What do you reckon to taking the crap Stanley blade back to the shop and asking for a refund? (not fit for purose IMHO). Its only a fiver but the manufactuer should really not be getting away with it. I've cut one branch with it, it was really slow, didn't want to bite and the blade too flexible. The blade really wanted to just jump off the wood rather than cut it
  15. I use a 24" bow saw for cutting small diameter branches for the woodburner. The last blade I had was fantastic, it lasted a good year and is still useable Sadly I can't find any makers marks on it. Last week I bought a replacement Stanley blade, its rubbish:thumbdown: At the independent DIY shop yesterday I had a choice of Bahco blades at around £10, AW at about £3 and Faithfull at about £4. The Stanley was a fiver so I went for the Bahco, not tried it yet. I've used AW and they're ok for the money I'd say, better than the Stanley. What manufactuers blades do you all prefer or should I just buy a Silky?
  16. Well he did ask for something, 'a bit quirky' Eggs
  17. I photographed a stone carver in the Bure Valley, near Aylsham ,the other day. He works in an old pig shed on a farm, they also have self-catering cottages Prices | North Farm Cottages. I reckon Mrs idiot would like the pretty river valley and you'd be interested in the stone carver and other workshops - definitely a quirky place
  18. Hey Dan, If you have any more crappy oak you can dump it all at my place
  19. . Yep, if I'd known that I wouldn't have wasted so much if my time looking at all those naked women
  20. I've found you can significantly speed up the drying time for oak if you split it into small logs - six months I'd say.
  21. Yes Steve, logged in tonight and the message was there. Don't remember when I last logged in though, may have been yesterday rather than earlier today.
  22. No mate, Big J isn't saying that the oak is burning too slow, he's saying the opposite, its burning too fast and with very little heat. Sounds like the comparison is mixed, green hardwood against dry, dead standing oak. If the oak is burning faster then that would make sense but it should be burning hotter
