  1. David Cameron was on tv last night and he mentioned 'the dignity of work'. Thats a good concept; however with businesses using zero hours contracts, low pay, and the neccesity of the Tax Credits system its no longer a 'given'.
  2. Always good to have a fair and frank exchange of views, you never know, there may be common ground to be found
  3. I agree that benefits shouldn't be a lifestyle choice, theres no doubt that for a minority it is. I do believe that its important that we have a welfare system that supports those in times of need though. Not everyone can work effectively throughout their lives. How about some of those on here who have had accidents? Or those that lose their jobs? Or suffer from depression. A friend of mine once said to me 'for most of your life you pay in, but sometimes you may need to take out'. That seems entirely reasonable to me.
  4. Thank you for reserving your judgement Capetown, much appreciated
  5. Heres the other interesting thing about that investment Capetown - the government gave me £250 for each child as a voucher to put into a CTF to get their savings started. F&C have done very well with it, no doubt about that, but they sent me a letter to say they're now imposing a fee of £25 per account per year. Either I pay in an additional £25 a year or they take it from the investment. That could mean that they hoover up yet more governemnt money from those parents that don't take any action - another naughty move I'd say.
  6. Oh yes, my kids investment I hadn't really thought of that as investing in the banking system but I guess it is in a way isn't it?
  7. How do you mean 'And don't you invest in the banking system..' I'm not sure I follow you there Capetown
  8. In my opinion there was a 'sense' of entitlement., only my opinion. They weren't elected were they I thought the Lib Dems put them there?
  9. I agree. Along with many others on here I do exactly as you say, small salary and dividends. That obviously results in a tax liability. Some of these massive coroprations seem to be paying zero tax. I think it was Starbucks who paid nothing for five years? I guess they can afford better acountants than I can.
  10. I don't have any problem with people becoming successful, thats good; if its through hard work, talent, skill and ability. The problem I have with our system is that we have a class of wealthy individuals who monopolise wealth and opportunity to the disadvantage of society as a whole, it isn't meritocratic. I particularly dislike the notion, that many of these people entertain, that they are entitled to positions of power and influence through a natural superiority. Cameron and Osbourne and the other Bullingdon boys fall into this category.
  11. How about corporation tax? Is it fair that global companies (Amazon, Starbucks etc.) can avoid paying their fair share?
  12. We've tried ignoring the super rich, in return they trashed the global banking system. Now we have another 200 billion on the national debt thats been used to bail them out You seem to be advocating a system of patrimoial capitalism, very regressive IMHO.
  13. Private health care and private schools shouldn't exist. We should all be in it together and a meritocratic system should allow talent, skill and ability to prevail.
  14. Interesting Eggs, thanks for that I'm with you, we need a progressive, fair tax system in the UK that doesn't penalise the poor. Anyone that doesn't believe that rising inequality is an issue should take a look at Thomas Piketty's recent book 'Capital' - Enlightening.
  15. PM sent oldwoodcutter Cheers
  16. Thats ace! Anyone ever need a tip site in Norfolk plaeae let me know, Always happy to have a few extra logs
  17. I agree. Last week I hired a car. A driver,Romanian, picked me up and drove me to the depot. We got chatting. Turns out he shares a flat here with a mate, earns £1000 a month, sends half home to his three sisters and mum who he supports, lives off the other half. He told me he likes to work. Work when you're young and life is easier when you're older,he says. Back in Romania he says he owns a six bed house he built himself with family help. Personally I can't knock someone with that kind of attitude. Anyone met any young English people with thesame attitude? I can't think of many.
  18. The Royal Mint is the manufacturer, government owned as far as I'm aware:confused1: The Bank of England calls the shots. They've 'printed' £375 billion as of september 2014. Thats a debt the UK taxpayer will have to pay back at some point and is been required to bail out the bankers that caused the global crisis in 2008. All the time George Osbourne has been imposing austerity to reduce the deficit hes been increasing the national debt through QE.
  19. Completely agree
  20. Looks like the revolution starts in Scotland - we need a politician Nicola Sturgeons calibre that we can vote for in England. I admire the way shes confronted this leak about her prefering Cameron to Miliband as PM. Her intergrity is impressive and makes the Westminster Old Boys network look pathetic.
  21. Well it would have been be too risky to try driving her to work in it wouldn't it
  22. You should have been a lawyer Skyhuck ££££££££
  23. I haven't had to go near a supermarket Jon, seems like friends and family have gone a bit bonkers with it:biggrin:
  24. I've had mine cut into around three foot lengths and leaned against standing tress for the last few years - I find the rain washes out the sap so when you come to log it, no problem.
  25. I'm about to refill my woodshed and I'm going to make sure theres a good amount of conifer in the mix along with the oak, ash etc. I love it.
