  1. Thats true, but its the exception, not the rule isn't it.
  2. We are taxed on inflation, its called Capital Gains Tax
  3. Found the info from the office for national statistics: 'Since 2001 there have been high levels of net inward migration, adding to the population at younger working ages. In part this was driven by the expansion of the European Union in 2004 and 2007. This period has also seen an increasing number of births, driven by both the immigration of women of childbearing age (15-44) and rising fertility among UK-born women.' Interestingly I don't know many folks with less than two children. Many of the families I know have three or more kids - I have three myself, although having twins rather makes a mockery of family planning!
  4. I agree Varty, That is also a fact, so too is the fact that fertility has risen amongst UK born women.
  5. Not true - free movement of workers is a key EU principle. Any UK government would be obliged to do the same, unless they chose to leave the EU of course.
  6. I'm in complete agreement
  7. The car was telling me it was 25 in Norwich at 5.00 Jon. I guess its a few degrees too high so probably pretty much same as you'd I'd say. Not a cloud in the sky.
  8. I was thinking its nepotism because normally it wouldn't be the recipient of the private school education that would be paying for it, that would be a wealthy relative, most likely a parent or grandparent. My dislike of it would be for that reason and because I feel that much talent that doesn't have wealth to support it doens't get the education it deserves and is therefore potentialy lost to society as a whole. It isn't meritocratic I believe we're pretty much in agreement Alec
  9. Thats interesting, thanks Gnome, I'll go take a look
  10. Excellent post Alec. I'd take you up on a couple of things. Firstly do you not feel that nepotism in our society often begins with a public school education? Secondly is it not worth voting for a small party such as The Greens? Yes they may have many inconsistencies in their policy, but, in my opinion, there is much to like too. Would a vote for them at least help, perhaps, to save a deposit and therefore be a vote for the democratic process itself?
  11. Cheers Gnome, thats the next one I'll be buying then! I've got tired of buying them then finding they don't really work very well. Whats the book with line drwaings? I've been thinking that photos are maybe not as good as illustrations with trees because photos tend to be very specific to the one tree being photographed with all its individuality, if you know what I mean?
  12. Thank you Geoff I really believe that a fair and frank exchange of views is very healthy, if we can all speak with respect for each others ideas. Sometimes I have to carefully check what I've written, as I'm sure others do, because I don't think its always easy to do that on a forum. Posts can 'come across' badly at times if we're not careful. Thanks all
  13. Thank you Woodworks:thumbup:
  14. Thanks for this thread, its a really good one The tree books I have I find are not specific enough. Often the photos are from too far away, there are no pictures of bark, or buds, orr leaves, or the tree in winter, etc. Whats the best guide, in fact is there one, that has all those things?
  15. Please don't take any offence Woodworks, none intended. I just mean I don't think you're likely to change your opinion whatevers said, but then you'd probably say the same about me. As far as I'm concerned theres absolutely no problem with saying what we think, keeping traps shut is not at all healthy. I shouldn't have made the 'glasses' remark, apologies. I personally value a robust exchange of views with everybody taking care not to insult anyone else, thats gow I learn things and your input has been great
  16. Well, thats exactly how I see it Mortimer Us little guys are right in the brown stuff if we make a misjudgement aren't we. The same free market economics just don't apply further up the food chain. Too big to fail - I'd love that! I take all the risks and make all profits if it goes my way the UK taxpayer picks up the tab if I make a cock-up, lovely:lol:
  17. Yes, nobodys for turning are they? Pretty much like the opinion polls in general, very little movement in any direction.
  18. Yes, lets not forget all of us as taxpayers had to bail out failed private enterprise
  19. I fear you may have rose-tinted Tory spectacles Woodworks Don't forget the letter from 100 leading doctors that accusses this government of 'withering away' the NHS. My personal view is that the Tories don't actually care - after all, they'll be using private health care. We're all in it together:sneaky2:
  20. I don't understand you Woodworks We're not under a Labour government, we've under a Conservative led government for the past five years. Or are you thinking that the NHS would be better without the Lib Dem involvement?
  21. Completely agree
  22. Thats definitely backwards Richie! Its the Tories and Lib Dems that have brought us to this point. Certainly in Education Michael Grove is almost universally despised for what he did. Remember the Tories have quietly removed him from that post while they still had time for people to forget him before election time. Seems to me the NHS and Education are both suffering from the same nonsense.
  23. Cheers for that slim reaper I'll know for next time. Lots of misspelling in that ad - maybe its perfectly innocent but somebody selling 'tree equipment' that includes a 'chan saw' and a 'grass strummer' just seems fishy to me
  24. Hi Jon, It didn't get on my t*t mate, I was just Then I gave him some
