  1. In which case he can spend all day on it smoking through wood, the other bloke can use the hot saws. That'll eat away at him.
  2. I have had this guy working for me for a couple of months. Very good in many ways, bit of a newbie but wants to learn etc. I've got high hopes for him. He just keeps blunting saws and denying it! 560/562/372 all get blunted by the saw fairy, he cannot sharpen so I spend a fair proportion of the day with a file. I've tried fronting him up but to no avail. I've even caught him at it, bucking up a trunk and touching the tip into the ground. He just says it didn't happen! Tomorrow I will have a little ceremony before work, I'll announce that for this day only he is banned from the good saws and must use the Stihl 271, our most hated saw. Let's see if that works.
  3. Yep I was thinking that, plus a loader on the tractor for the trunk sections. Get him to do it for the wood or at the most 100 quid. Price wise it's up to you, if it's as easy as it looks around a grand.
  4. You'll probably just begin with private clients. An accountant is essential to avoid catastrophe. Apart from that you don't need any licenses or qualifications. Especially for maintenance. Just start simple.
  5. The moral of the story is to charge for doing the application.
  6. I have no interest with being friends with my competitors, it's my reputation with clients I care about, not other tree firms. I'll have a quick chat at the petrol station, admire (or laugh at) their gear. I have a few that I sub for/they sub for me. We rub along ok. We often quote the same jobs, I've even hired guys to help me on jobs they've quoted themselves (and vice versa)
  7. It was a question.
  8. and if it's the householder who did the application?
  9. Sending someone a letter offering your services is low? Just targeted advertising.
  10. Send it to the address in the paper, it's a letter, I'm not knocking on the door. If I take work under the nose of the competition, so much the better.
  11. I send a standard letter saying if they wanted a quote I'd be happy to go round and price. Cost of a stamp. I've won dozens of Jobs over the years.
  12. Sounds like they contacted them after seeing the application in the paper. In fairness I do that.
  13. I understand, so I do......
  14. Very good review thanks. You used the word "wee" too often though!
  15. Just send them a dirty letter explaining the inconvenience. Other than that, nothing.
  16. I'm guessing it was too big and the client wanted it reduced.
  17. I think he was pointing out how fickle tastes can be. People said the 200s and 66s were poor at first, just as now the new saws are lambasted.
  18. Many smaller grinders will go through a 36 in garden gate and are lever controlled. Much nicer!
  19. Therein lies the rub. Some people have had bad experiences with a saw, like you, and are drawn like a moth to the flame to criticise it (as is your privilege of course) They tend to drown out people who just want to say "it's very good thank you" Bit like me and land rovers (although they really are rubbish!)
  20. I'd rather watch strictly come dancing, (which I am!)
  21. I hear you, sorting the wheat from the chaff is the problem. There are some posters whose opinions I trust, others.....less so.
  22. sharpening, fun? Really?
  23. A vice at a good height, plus a good lighting set up just above it.
  24. I read a story about a guy practicing his motocross, though he was doing ok till he was overtaken above his head, the guy literally jumped over him!
  25. So this is a stihl with a kind of "auto tune" (Forgive my ignorance)
