  1. Doesn't that mean they just believe in God (the 31%) what's so odd about that?
  2. How do you thin ivy?
  3. Start at the top with a big flat head screwdriver, as you move further down it will become easier to peel. Fissured bark like oak is more difficult than say beech or sycamore. It can be quite therapeutic if there's no time pressure. Be prepared for a flush of water shoots/epicormic growth next year as light hits the inner structure of the tree.
  4. It's easier to remove live ivy than long dead stuff.
  5. Great work, great video. Well done.
  6. I don't own a bandit nor am I likely to buy one, but I love this thread.
  7. It's like this, you say to a client "we'll chip up the small stuff and log up what too big to go through the chipper" to which they agree. Then when they see 6" or more diameter going through the chipper they get all funny and want you to log up the smaller stuff. This would involve more time and effort so you say something like "ok we'll try and do that" make a big show of saving a couple of branches then when they go inside or get bored and leave you ram as much as you can through. Gets you on to the next job/in the pub/on the sofa quicker
  8. Have to say I hate people I don't know calling me "mate" especially shop assistants, tradesmen etc.
  9. Yes exactly, sometimes you have to pay lip service though.
  10. "Can you keep as much as possible for logs rather than chipping? We want to save as much as possible" Once they've gone back inside.............
  11. I'm a bit confused, are you two connected?
  12. Which is a shame cos they're in Yorkshire as well. So he could have collected them, worth a try on the phone in the morning.
  13. Same happened to me, I bought them from the company that supply the trailer frame, called Bradley doublelock I think. Get the number from the axle and contact them.
  14. Ime they are actually asking, in a roundabout way if you can do anything on the price. It's like a dance, if you don't want to dance fine.
  15. To the OP, forget about it, can't win them all. There's always a thread like this going on at sometime or other here, and I suspect on every other trade forum. "Smaller outfits charging stupid prices" "probably unprofessional, not like us" "They'll be bankrupt in months" etc etc. Well it's a very competitive market place, especially in the Home Counties. If you keep losing work, stop blaming all the others who are too big/too small or whatever and look at yourself. Not aimed at anyone in particular just a thought about the the current incarnation of this constant theme.
  16. Looks good. Handy tool, nice and sharp.
  17. I wouldn't even bother emailing back.
  18. Precisely, most decent climbers with half a brain and a sprinkling of people skills will start up his own thing within a few years. Colleges don't turn out ready to go climbers, they turn out ready to train climbers. Which is fair enough. You need at least a year of commercial work before you're up to speed.
  19. Neither have I, and in 20 years I've never had any clutch bearings let go. Admittedly I'm a "tree surgeon" rather than a forester.
  20. Thanks Twig, that has been my experience, at least when trying to sell wood to a sawmill. They have also pointed out faults in the bark which point to its likely presence.
  21. Ok cheers, does a tree have to be felled to assess the presence of shake (last question!)
  22. Is shake in oak due to soil type?
  23. Make sure you attach the chipper behind whilst doing your calculations on height.
  24. Ok Pete, I've been in the workshop this morning acquainting myself with it. Here's a stupid question, in this picture you can see the rotor will be turning clockwise as we look, the scoops or wings we can see seem to be curved the wrong way for maximum "scooping" I checked behind the wheel on my TW and the scoops are the other way round to this. Now I know I'm being stupid, please explain how. Sorry pic is upside down.
  25. Cheers Ropechucka, i'll order a new set of disc/blades Monday (plus anvils or shears as Pete B calls them) ps your inbox is full Pete. Might as well refurb the whole business end while its apart.
