  1. maybe that makes sense, it "forces" people into filling up when the garage is quiet. Nothing worse than filling up after work and being stuck in a queue.
  2. Firing SSGs up into a tree doesn't strike me as being safe... Do many squirrel shooters load up with zombie killing cartridges before going shooting?
  3. what type of damage? tbh, I just cant see number 5 shot penetrating a trees bark and getting into the timber (unless fired at very short range). I think we've all seen damage done by squirrels on trees... I enjoy shooting squirrels and I don't want this to turn into a "shooting squirrels kills trees" urban legend.
  4. why would drey poking cause any real damage to a tree? The article you link to in a later post says this: "As the presence of steel shot in timber may cause degrade, nonsteel shot is recommended." It doesn't indicate that all shooting causes damage to trees... how many people shoot with steel? Is steel shot going to do more damage to a tree than a squirrel??
  5. Tbh, "working" when you are tired can be a waste of time.... Take some time off and come back to work like a coiled spring!
  6. When I worked in the Middle East I was paying 20 pence a litre for petrol and for that I could sit in my car while someone filled my car up LOL, I remember seeing some arab driving a unimog as his car, no where else could anyone afford to do that. The low oil price is good though anything that stops Saudi Arabia having money to spread their evil is a good thing
  7. It obviously is. But every other business that deals with food has to pay business rates... Ie abatoir, butcher, refrigerated haulage company etc.....
  8. I've often looked at hill land and wondered how much actuall food the land produces. The vegetation looks poor and the sheep are shivering in a corner. I can't see it producing that much by the time you exclude supplemental and winter feeding. If you plant the land with trees you get more shelter and the deeper tree roots bring up nutrients from the deeper soils. I honestly think there would be an abundance of deer if hill land was planted out. Is venison not worth more than lamb?
  9. I live in Scotland, a lot of the hill land here is covered with sheep. tbh, I would prefer if we got rid of the sheep and had more trees etc. I just don't see any economic sense for a hill farmer to have a 1000 sheep and sell 2000 lambs a year at £50 each. like it or not, I think most British people would rather have more wildlife than farms that have been grazed stupid by sheep.
  10. ehhhmmm, the point I was making that most businesses that have property pay business rates to fund essential services like schools/ road repairs etc. But farms pay nothing at all.....
  11. I don't like haggling, but when it comes to car insurance etc. I always play the "I've got a cheaper price elsewhere game". Saving £20 is worth it for 10 minutes work. My brother plays a similar game with Sky telly, he tries the old "your product is very expensive and I wish to cancel" and get's 50% off for 6 months.
  12. Farmers get other subsidies as well.. they don't have to pay business rates... How can it be right that someone with a small shop pays business rates but someone with a £5m farm pays nothing?
  13. Farmers get other subsidies as well... they don't have to pay any business rates on their farms... how can it possible be right that someone with a small corner shop pays business rates but someone with a £5m farm pays nothing?
  14. Yeah, JK would never spread to the OP's garden...
  15. Yeah everyone knows that Germany is building up it's U boat fleet to try and starve Britain into staying in the EU... I just don't see food production as being a major part of the UK economy in coming years... If we can buy food from other places it's possible that places like Africa will be less of a sh1t hole. The taxpayer pays a fortune in subsidies for farmers and the immigrants that the farmers need. It might be better to invest that money elsewhere... Where does a lot of UK animal feed come from? South America? I don't see anything great about cutting down rainforests so that UK dairy farmers can import soya based feedstuffs... Before people had alarm clocks there used to be a person that went round at 6am each morning and rattled peoples windows with a long stick to wake them up. Things just move on..
  16. As previously said we pay taxes so farmers can get their subsidies... Perhaps if people paid the 'real' price of food they wouldn't waste so much.... I get the train through Scotland a lot, I see a lot of strawberry farms with dozens of people working there. It's fairly certain that they will be East european workers getting a fortune in benefits etc. I honestly think if we import more food it would be cheaper for us as we wouldn't have to pay the farmers subsidies and pay to subsidise all the farmers Imported labour. EU subsidies also mess up African farmers as they can't compete against food dumped from Europe.
  17. I've a 50 foot oak I want taken down, will it cost £125?
  18. Throughout most of my working life I've been on a salary. Over the last year I've been self employed. Is it just me, or when you're self employed are you really reluctant to take holidays? I cant help thinking if I take a week off it costs me double as I don't earn and have to shell out for a holiday.
  19. I wonder if this "buy British" philosophy will mean farmers stop buying Toyota and Mitsubishi pick ups?
  20. I made a log store for my parents from Gabon baskets (they are wire mesh baskets used in civil engineering to hold stone). I made the roof from plywood. Worked out at £100 for a 2 cubic metre store.
  21. Interesting link. One quote that caught my eye was: "Sean Rickard told BBC Radio 4's Farming Today that dairy farmers were paid an average of £28,000 a year from the taxpayer."
  22. what types of subsidy will the landowner get?
  23. I presume the Forestry Commission is happy with the land being changed to grazing? Typically the felling licence requires that the land is replanted with trees.... I cant help thinking that taking out 21 acres of stumps is a big expense for little real reward.
  24. What sound system have you got in the lada Niva? I usually find some hard core dance music gets the team going throughout the day. you have to set volume to max though to make sure everyone can hear it above the saws etc. Quality speakers are a must for anyone wanting to run a tree team. Cheap speakers are just p1sh at high volume.
  25. Steep site and removing stumps could be a bit of a nightmare when it comes to soil erosion....
