  1. Recently read The woodchip Handbook as I am using woodchip to make compost to field spread. Summer cut chip and leaf is fine to spread on fields immediately as the leaf provides the N to break down the chip. Ideally for woody material it is mixed with dung or similar before composting. In trials using it around trees the benefits were enormous! Composted chip was more effective but any chip is better than none. Just to add I've been planting pot grown Royal oaks this afternoon and putting woodchip round them.
  2. Off to Hallaton and District Ag Soc . match in Leicestershire next Saturday, 3rd December, LE16 7UG. Anyone else going?
  3. Have any of you read the book "The man who planted trees". This thread reminded me of it, might have to reread it now.
  4. Yes you're right the pfanners arent the lightest but they are a good fit which helps. It is always worth finding the time to travel to try clothing on, especially boots, they must be the most returned item due to sizing and fit! Hope your boots are good 'cos just bought some off you!
  5. Sorry, did not make myself clear, she wants to use the chain saw! So looking for comfy chainsaw trousers which have a hard wearing outer for the thorns.
  6. My wife wants to be more active when I am hedgelaying and not just be the goffer. She needs chainsaw trousers and boots, which will resist scrambling about in blackberry brambles, meet safety needs for cutting and not break the bank. Suggestions please. TIA OG
  7. Gimlet Sorry to hear you won't be posting hedging pics, have enjoyed them. Good luck
  8. Come to FFF&B ploughing match. Really friendly group. It was where I did my first single comp and the experts are great for advice. The winner at FFF&B was 3rd at the Nationals in the open, the 2nd was judging, third won the Intermediate Midland , I was 4th and then 2nd so a good standard! Having said that I could see an improvement in mine between the 2 comps.through practice and knowing what the judges want! I can only dream, I fear downhill from here!
  9. Having performed ok at the local ploughing match I plucked up courage and went to the Nationals. The idea was not to be last in my class. It all started badly when I arrived to find my plot next to the tents etc so I was viewed by every person who visited. Secondly I had a camera crew parked next to me with some white haired chap sitting on a plastic chair and then doing interviews. Nothing else for it than to bury my head in the hedge and crack on! Suffice it to say that it went better than expected and I finished 2nd in class, beaten by the same person who was just above me at the ploughing match. A good day was had by all and thanks to those who organised it. (I know a couple get on here.)
  10. Recognise the skyline, although it could be anywhere along the Vale.
  11. Pictures from the Ploughing match, I could only manage 4th again, at least out of 7 this year. Disappointed not to win last years regrowth, that will teach me for being so anal and going to have a look!
  12. No more pics, I sent him back to get some more, not heard anything since, hope he didn't eat it!
  13. Son found this yesterday, he made an identification, would love confirmation.
  14. Went back in the autumn of 2020 and half inched 300 plus acorns which I have grown on and will plant out this autumn when I can get a spade in the ground. A good friend's daughter died recently and they are going to plant a small wood in her memory. I would like to give them one of the Winsor park oaks and would like it to stand out. Would Scarlet or Red oak cope with clay?
  15. Regrowth from last years FFF&B Ploughing match. Pleased with my length. This year is on saturday24th September at Standlake, Oxon.
  16. a pair on my pond with six young, being watched very closely by 4 ravens. They have survived for 4 days so far!
  17. What are these strange growths on my oak whip? 2nd year in pot, should be planted out for the Queen, the acorn came from her!
  18. Finally got finished, 380 m and a big heap of brash.
  19. Nice work, where is that to?
  20. Something a bit more manly this weekend!
  21. Took the wife for a day out to the BHHA "Skills of the Hills" day. Didn't tell her she was my gofor for the day. Tried a new style for us, which turned out o.k.
  22. Getting a bit easier and a better result.
