  1. No I managed to stand on the roots and reach beneath my feet! Next go i shall have to get in, a big thorn growing in the middle. water not too deep but I,m not sure about the mud.
  2. Todays and the next months challenge, not pretty but hopefully will reinvigorate. It should get easier farther along the field when we get away from the bridge which has caused the bank erosion.
  3. I find for hedgelaying that I use my stihl petrol for cleaning out, brush cutting, removing brambles etc where you need constant power. The chain is also more resistant to damage. Then switch to the electric for the pleaching and trimming, ie the stop/start stuff in the bottom of the hedge, no fumes, noise or constant starting. Works for me but I'm only a part time amateur!
  4. Torygraph magazine yesterday full of pictures Of Charles promoting hedgelaying. I didn't get my invite to Highgrove!
  5. 292kg scientifically calculated.
  6. Put on new ignition coil last night and she fired straight up. Just to test her in anger making oak gate posts. Thanks for your help.
  7. I read somewhere or heard on Gardeners QT that they have a degree of control and tend not to have 2 big years following as it is too big a drain on resources. We have none here but have masses of hawthorn and other hedge berries.
  8. Pollard it.
  9. Update! Husky 245 running after opening up the H screw, but not sounding brilliant, I guess I need to fine tune it. Stihl would not improve with tinkering with screws, or cleaning carb, so replaced all carb diaphrams etc and would fire but not run. Reset screws to factory settings and she sounds happy, so just need to find time to try in anger. Thanks for your help.
  10. Gave the H screw on the Husky 10 mins and she certainly runs happier in the workshop. Will try in anger tomorrow.
  11. Spud Thanks for that brilliant explanation. I begin to suspect I need to replace carb parts. May have been lead up the garden path by 2 misbehaving at the same time. The metering arm on the Walbro 047 carb is set 1mm below the rim of the carb, matched by a 1mm lump on the metering diaphram. Is there an accurate way to measure this?
  12. Spudulike et al. Many thanks for your help and patience! I am stuggling to work out why two saws on different fuel mixes made up at different times should show such similar symptoms, particularly the stihl which been very reliable for many years. On the bright side my 350 ran fine on the new fuel mix today. It seems odd to me that the stihl would sit at idle but then of its own accord rev up and die? I did take out the gauze filter and spray cleaner through it but did not look at it against the light. I have not touched carb screws, feel that is above my pay grade, unless you say it is O.k
  13. Update today. Got new fuel, local station only does E5 so have probably been running on it for a while. Made up new mix for both saws, double checked cleanliness of everything. Husky started easily, but bogged and died as soon as I open throttle. Restarted easily, left it on idle,it sat for 30 seconds then revved up and died. Stihl started fine but died on revving up. Any more clues please
  14. The stihl carb I took apart was clean of debris. My first thought was water. I had an issue once before, on that occasion the fuel looked like an emulsion. This did not. The only common factor is that they could both be E10. Or maybe just coincidence.
  15. I did not fill the cans, but the two ladies who did were instructed to get Super not E10. I understood that use of E10 would have long term effects on gaskets, pipes etc. not an immediate impact on running. Correct me if I am wrong.
  16. I agree but two different mixes made up with different fuel batches?
  17. Stihl not been used for 2 months. Went yesterday to pollard willow, saw running fine, cut half of stems , then saw died. Fired up and died as soon as I touched the throttle. Cleaned out fuel tank and found more saw dust than I am happy about.( I am not the only one to use the saw!) Stripped and cleaned carb, no obvious muck. Saw will now run on half choke but dies on throttle. Today grabbed Husky to finish job. Half way through second tree did exactly the same. Can get it to tick over for a while but touching throttle it dies. WTF! Any suggestions? (Not got back to 365 yet!) Thanks OG
  18. Should have said that I swapped in a plug from another saw which was working. I will find a plug and modify to test. Thanks Just off to tidy up a willow tree i have pollarded with a tree shear. Will test tonight.
  19. Gents, I need your help again. My 365 has been on a mill, not much work in terms of total hours. Never been a great starter but now nothing. Fuel to plug. Looked in through exhaust port. To my untrained eye piston looks ok. Hangs and then drops, then hangs again on starter cord. Have a spark, but not convinced it is strong enough. Any way I test? Am I barking up the wrong tree? TIA OG
  20. Yorkshire I always think is the most "brutal" style. Your picture shows much more brush left than is usual. I struggle to take enough brush out of the hedge to impress the judges!
  21. Pictures from yesterdays hedgelaying at the FFF&B ploughing match. Suffice to say mine was 4th(out of 4) but I had a go, the rest are professionals and gave me loads of help.
  22. Pretty dodgy pictures, Crack willows?
  23. I have a number of very large willows which are in danger of falling and blocking the river. I have some funding but it will only pay for a third of the work needed if it is done by a surgeon. Could I employ a 360 with a shear to do the donkey work and use the tree surgeon to tidy up and ensure we get some live pollards. Any guidance on pollarding very large maiden willows would be appreciated. TIA OG
  24. Relatively new to milling, cut up 6 trees into planks and a 12" square beam. At present have a large oak was wind blown 5 years ago, been cut into 3 for 3 years. I am trying to cut some timber for a porch. Cut a 6" by 18" slab last night, about 12ft long. By the time I had cut to the end it had risen up by at least an inch on the end first cut. Is there anything I can do about this, cutting technique or planning cuts around tree in a different order? Thanks for your help. OG
  25. I have an electric stihl with a 12" bar I use for hedgelaying. I find it brilliant for cutting pleachers and heels. Only have a small battery which lasts a couple of hours. Only down side is the micro chain is easy to damage. Tend to use a 13" stihl to go along the hedge first cutting out rubbish, trimming down to the ground, removing blackberry etc. saving the electric for the precision work.
