  1. managed to get some robinia burr, it turns well and has fantastic colour and character - highly recomended.
  2. i was once asked to take down a dead rowan standing just 6" from the next-door fence. strangely enough, there was a small round hole in the fence at exactly the same position as a small round hole in the tree!!!
  3. a long time customer of mine was asked by his new neighbour to top some of his lawsons, he politely declined. a month later he got a letter from his nieghbours solicitor explaining that the neighbours daughters education was being compromised because she couldn't get the educational programmes via the satellite dish. we went round and saw the neighbours wife. the satellite dish was over the kitchen window at about 8'. we suggested that they raise the dish, clear shot at the sky, no more problem. the lady looked at us and then said, well, you only need to take off about 4'. we turned and left. some people are a waste of breath...
  4. cocktails & drinks up a tree sounds pretty good to me!!!
  5. the collins tree guide - i have two , one at home and one in the truck - good for tree id and general info. but for more serious stuff, try 'the body language of trees' by Mattheck & Breloer, (ISBN 0-11-753067-0). and also 'diagnosis of ill-health in trees' by Strouts & Winter,( ISBN 0-11-753545-1).
  6. but it also depends on what is in the immediate neighborhood, am i surrounded by development, or is it a woodland edge. With a woodland backdrop, my favourite tree is Quercus coccinea, with a Davidia involucrata, and a Magnolia Grandiflora.
  7. bad news, mate. mine got stolen a year back, (199,992 miles on the clock), it was found a week later wrecked, been used to rob some bikes of a farm, police knew who it was but no prints or DNA. gutted.
  8. looks like your hinge is slightly off, suggests maybe the tension was released in the upper half fractionally earlier than in the lower half.
  9. can't see a 6m leylandii hedge being very thin, meaning whatever you are on ain't gonna reach, best get into the thick of it.
  10. not laurel, it's griselinia littoralis. but any timber burns when it's seasoned well. all the gases go up the flue, so stay off the roof!
  11. look real close, i bought a saw of ebay, could see the burnt guidebar, guy said he'd had it for a year and now it won't cut - looked like he'd never sharpened the chain! paid £65, got a nearly new saw, put on a new bar and chain, still using it today!
  12. looks a bit cluttered in places, don't be afraid to take a few limbs off back to a main branch. look for crossing branches, overlong but thin branches
  13. have bought oil pump for my top-handled echo on two occasions from the states, 1st time arrived ok, yesterday 2nd time royal mail wouldn't release it until paid import duty plus a handling fee - ripoff b'stards.
  14. you've allready got some variety, so just fill the gaps with the biggest hawthorn whips you can get.
  15. borrow a tirfor with a 50m wire. should give you more options for an anchor point.
  16. i have to admit to having used that technique BUT much lower down only to separate the root from the trunk, then used a winch to pull it out.
  17. cutting at A may lead to end weight loading on the lateral, whereas cutting at B or beyond would encourage bushier regrowth.
  18. i've been using recycled chip oil (filtered) for years with no problem.
  19. i am impressed by some of the work on show, here are my humble offerings. and can anyone offer any advice on selling??
