  1. It's great. Love the style. Keep doing whatever you're doing.
  2. Great job!
  3. Impressive! Not much I can add really to what's been said. I'd maybe extend the mouth line, but it looks great as is. Good eye. Crash on. Use whatever tools get the result you want. You are now addicted. Enjoy!
  4. Don't think I posted this on here, but just came across the pic. I actually remembered to take pics of this carve. So got some along the way too. Collage time. One of my best'uns I reckon.
  5. Fantastic work! Great idea, execution and craftsmanship. Sweeeet!
  6. It's a great shape, very nice. Whether or not they can turn their heads 180, I think they can, it looks ace and should easily sell.
  7. Feel the force! Like it. I guess using your minds eye, means there's more of "you" the artist in the piece, and room for maneuver, not just copying an owl. I think that develops a style of your own, which is unique and sets you apart from other carvers/artists. We are all inspired and emulate stuff we like but my best stuff is just because I want to carve something. But...... I will be referring to pictures, at least to find a posture etc.. I'm not as au fey with owls as I should be being a carver, very part-time. I always try my best and hope.
  8. It's awesome Si! You have quite a repertoire of owl styles, and yeh the Bear equivalent. I've got two to do as well. Hope I can do half as good a job on them as one of your owls mate.
  9. Good luck with it! I'd love to but work gets in the way. Although, I'm about to do a kids play area at a school and I'm gonna incorporate a few carvings in there. ( I'll post pics). It's very hard to give constructive criticism without sounding negative, especially when it's just text. I try to be honest and hopefully helpful. I like to see the wood if it's a beautiful piece,,, but some carvings benefit from paint/stain/scorching etc. the best painted ones I've seen are, I think airbrush painted, but that's another skill altogether including the know how. I'm still learning to carve. Just thought of this one......case in point. Don't usually do colour but thought I'd play( glad I did). Some random stains from the shed as close as I could get mixing the colours. Late Christmas pressie, about a month ago. The colour helps identify it, but the face is pants! Needed to seriously thin the snout from the underside and no "top lip". Looks like something else, a bear or something, weird! Recipient loved it, but I wasn't happy with it and probably why I didn't post it. Still in the spirit of the conversation.
  10. Cool as Si! Damn it, I gotta play with my saws soon, been too long.
  11. It matters not! It's a fox, with character, it's your piece. The colouring is good. I like it! The question is...are you happy with it? If you do arty stuff and pick holes in your own stuff, i think it's a good thing. Makes you better for next time round. Depends on which direction you take your style (realism, cartoon, abstract etc.) I'm no expert, and my own worst critic. How long have you been carving?
  12. Cool! Get some paint like this on it. Dunno where from, but thought it'd look even cooler. Although this looks like it's under black. (Unknown carver)
  13. Good effort, looks like he's holding on with his talons for dear life in a stiff breeze. By undercutting like that you've put him off balance. Needs the feet further back, unless the "stiff breeze"look was the desired effect in which case it's genius. I like it.
  14. I've seen a few road kill carvings, raccoons with tyre tracks and the like so I'm guessing 'twas a carver across the pond. It's one I'd like to try someday.
  15. As well as the bird of prey on'tuther thread, they've got character for sure. I like em, and they're selling so you must be doing something right. Carve on!
  16. For a months experience, they're ace!
  17. He's cute, got a lot of character! Good job.
  18. Very cool! Awesome job.
  19. Beautiful mate. Top job!
  20. Thank you all. Great comments- think I'm getting to grips with this carving lark. Getting better at least. Need to carve more.
  21. A late Christmas present. First carve in a while, my first wolf, and well chuffed with the result. Thanks for looking
  22. Nailed it Si! Commission ?
  23. Maybe the warden ran out of tickets. Happened to me. I was at the end of a long line of offenders, and when I got back to my van some fella shouted "ya lucky bar steward " from across the road, and told me she had gone back to wherever to get more. Ha!
  24. I'll travel if viable.
  25. Cheers Si! Yep! Not far for me and I'm up for it.
