  1. Ive been using a 560 this year and it's very powerful. Heavy but comfortable to use. As a clearing saw the power is excellent.
  2. You can't pay the mortgage with promises of work next year. I'm surprised at people's views here. I suspect he would rather have a relationship built on respect. He's not an idiot. He changed the spec part way through a job. That has an on-cost which he expects to pick up. He may lose respect for you if your self-esteem is so low that you don't pass on some of the cost. Yes don't rip him off but if it takes you an extra 3 hours, then you charge at a fair rate for that time. Good relationships are built on mutual respect.
  3. If you asked a builder to add another 18 inches to a wall, he wouldn't do it for free. Why should you? So point out to him how much longer it will take, what your day rate is and charge accordingly. Otherwise how will he learn???
  4. It has 24.6 million BTU's per cord which is a few percentage down on Q. Robur but 23% higher than Ash (everybody's favourite firewood). So not bad.
  5. Great table of different woods. Thanks!
  6. Yes it does
  7. No, a shed is useless for drying, how every many holes you make in it. Logs will be much happier outside with a hat on but in the wind and sun. Lift them off the ground with pallets and a couple of sheets of corrugated iron (or equivalent) on the top and they'll soon dry. Sun if you can get it but wind is most important.
  8. Avensis or skoda (which have three out of the 10 most popular cars in the Which survey this year)
  9. Coccinea is generally a much more angular serration and smaller leaf. Problem with a single leaf is that vigorous growth can produce massive leaves even in sessile oak, but my money's on Rubra.
  10. Probably red oak but there are dozens of different species in the red oak family. A picture of the tree would help.
  11. They seem to pass emergency regs each year to make it available for the month of August only.
  12. It's too late to apply it this year and it will be available next year so I'm not sure there's a problem here.
  13. meths works but keep it off your skin ie wear gloves as you absorb it and its pretty toxic.
  14. Looks like the lions mane that I grow on sawdust!
  15. The maintenance manual is freely available on the web. Not done that job so don't know but if you can't find the PDF on the web then PM me with an email address and I'll email it to you.
  16. Good question. Depends entirely on your management aims. If you want 2 tons of firewood per acre each year and lots of coppice products then you will need to pull it into shape with lots of work. The things you describe are probably fine going every couple of weeks for 4 hrs or so. I go to mine most weeks but am doing a lot of thinning, mulching brambles and replanting. Logs take less time. As you imply - just enjoy it.
  17. I've just stacked 6.5 cubic metres of birch cut to 16 inch lengths freshly felled. Much of it is unsplit as from thinnings, up to 4 inches. Started at 35% moisture but after two months under cover it is down to 14%. The bigger split stuff is lower still but birch will dry fine as rounds up to 6 inches, just a bit/lot slower. Once dry, don't see why it would ever rot. All this assumes it is covered and with decent airflow.
  18. Sycamore yes, goes mouldy as soon as you look at it. Don't have the problem with Birch, so surprised. Air flow is the only answer. Move it into the open rather than inside.
  19. Wasn't planning to buy one, just amused me what they will do to get you to part with your money for a bargain!
  20. 211 is a great little saw. I use mine a lot as it's lovely and light. Cuts well and since I put a bit more ventilation in the muffler and tuned it, the revving is very good. Recommend it and would get one again.
  21. Interested in people raving about the Husq 365 as a top ground saw. The link below is cheap and claims to be a brand new 365 assembled from genuine parts in China. Any thoughts? High Quality Air-cooling Husqvarna 365 special petrol Chainsaw Chain Saw | eBay
  22. used it a lot and they all speak or write English.
  23. Having cut down about 100 birches recently in my wood the smaller ones all regrew. Bigger old trees tend not to. At 8 inches they will regrow.
  24. Don't take this so called institute too seriously. They are a pressure group run by a claimed professor at the Open University (who have no knowledge of her). They don't do serious science, but scare mongering. Much of their stuff on homeopathy is very funny and well worth a read if you like a laugh. But please don't pay for their paper, it only encourages them.
  25. Thanks for sharing. That was beautiful. Wallace and Gromit do woodworking!
