  1. There's been lots of talk recently about daffodils blooming and the odd Bumble bee showing its face, but I was still amazed to find Bluebells starting to push their heads up whilst walking the Dog through our woods today. Were in south east Kent, but never thought for a minute that I would ever see a Bluebell, in the green, the wrong side of January!!. If we get the usual weather in Jan And Feb, come April the carpet of Blue that is seen every year will be sadly missing. I've attached a picture showing just a couple, but on closer inspection the woodland floor was already covered in them , strange times ahead.

    Hornets

Hi. We've had Hornet nests a few times in barn and stable buildings. I found them calm, fascinating and generally just go about their own business, amazing to see the intricate paper/wood nests the workers build. come mid October only the few newly hatched queens remain, and these will over winter in the same way that many butterfly do. One thing I do know is that they never use the same nest twice.
  3. Don't burn a lot of Oak, usually Hornbeam, Birch and Aspen. I've now sandwiched it in with Hazel, looks like ( thanks to the arbtalk friendlies ) I may have found the answer. The Oak is like a piece of steel, rocket hard and that's compared even to the Hornbeam !!!
  4. Tree surveyor for a mortgage company. Sold my house last year and the buyers mortgage company wanted a tree survey done. 290-00 bar for 20 mins work, and that included drinking tea. Its a lot of money for a bullshit exercise.
  5. Another great bit of advise, im only an occasional visitor to this site, not being in the trade, but its always been a valuable source of information, along with fantastic friendly guys, cheers again. :blushing:
  6. Hi Matey. Go to your messages, then open up the settings tab, its usually the 3 dots in the bottom right hand corner. Locate the SMS ENCODING METHOD and change it to AUTOMATIC. Job done.
  7. Ok, sounds like a plan. Cheers for your help guys. YNWA
  8. I reckon you might be on to something there Jon. Weird though because it don't hiss or bubble any moisture out . It just sits and glows, i'm mixing with some past coppice Hazel that Id forgot all about and brought home tonight.
  9. Defo not a lightning strike, the whole trunks still in tacked.
  10. Well there is heat from it but not great. One thing I have notice is the lack of ash that remains, Get up in the morning and it looks like the fire was never lit, saves one job I suppose.
  11. Hi Jon. About 18 inches side to side, probably around 50-60 year old.
  12. Hi Guys. I realise this may be a dumb question, but is it possible that wood can be too old to burn effectively ? I ask as I've been burning some 20 odd year old fallen Oak that just doesn't want to play. I've recently run out of stored firewood, so decided to saw up an Oak tree that has been lying in our woods for many years. Its as hard as a rock, and pretty well rot free. I can get it to burn slowly if I open all the stove vents, but it just don't wanna play the game. No hissing from moisture or the usual signs of wet wood etc. Pain in the backside, as I spent 4hrs Friday sawing splitting and lugging the stuff home, it looks like the ideal fire wood.
  13. Stronghold worked for my lab. Also superb for sarcoptic mange. There's the odd run of barbed wire in our woods, just the right height to not only rub on a foxes back, but also a working Labrador !!! Also treats a few other parasites with one 3 pack dose. The vet I go to always promise to price match an online quote too, around £18 i think for 3 month dosage, defo recommend it. Good luck.
  14. Ever thought of getting a little Dt 50 for the short term matey ?, might be worth considering. You'll then have transport and subsequently find access to work and other opportunities a lot easier. What age are you, if you dont mind me asking ?
  15. Aspen for a quick base, easy to split and rapid drying time. Then dump a large whole Hornbeam log on top. Set the vents on the log burner to half & half and forget about it for the next four hours....Not touched the oil central heating yet. With all the talk of energy price hikes, there's nothing better than free heating:sneaky2:
  16. I picked up a as new husky 346xp for 210 bar a few months ago. Had very little use and is a dream to use. Found it on ebay. If you've got patience then this much maligned auction site is hard to beat. The guy even threw in a can of fuel, 10ltrs of chain oil, files, spare chain, and a splitting axe !!!. He said it was his Dads who had recently passed away . Got it cheap as he listed as buyer collects only, helped that I was only 5 miles away.
  17. I use a Nikon d80, with a Sigma 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 EX APO OS Lens . The Sigma is as good as the Nikon version and 2/3 of the price. Still not cheap though. Had it for 3-4 years and no problems so far. Once you get a Nikon or Cannon, its then difficult to change camps due to the lens fit.
  18. Hi. I've got a similar piece of land here in Kent. Stables, 3 acres with water and electricity on site. Had a letting agent out the other day, he reckons around 400-500 bar monthly, with a bit of a tart up, though that was for the whole yard and use of the 15 acres of woodland beyond.
  19. May I also be so bold as to ask for a forwarding of the graph ?. I was trying to think of another way of asking, but there's been so many " jumping on the band wagon " type comments, I cant think of another way. [email protected] Thanks v much. (if you send it), if not, no worries.
  20. Been out in the woods today, 22c here in Kent, loverly.
