  1. i think gobbypunk is the guy for your area mate.
  2. hi all i was watching a show about the nation's favorite song from the 80's and both bonnie tyler's total eclipse of the heart and michael jackson's billie jean were very close to being no 1 when i came in to this world. however it turned out to be "Down Under" by men at work. [ame] [/ame] it got me wondering, what was top of the pops when you came in to this world???

    old old saw

    looks home made?
  4. for what you are looking to make i would go for the scroll saw. you will soon find out if this is not the right tool and can then add a bandsaw if you need it.
  5. pineapples don't grow on trees... i think?
  6. you are an inspiration sean, i wish everyone had the outlook on life that you do... had my own accident the other day when a lovely macrocarpa bowl exploded as i was sanding it and tried ripping my left nipple off but compared to you i'll put it down as a scratch nothing more....
  7. i went to a demo years ago at toolpost and when i said that i used the roughing gouge to do the outside of bowls he looked at me like i'd just confessed to murdering his kids... i rarely use it for that purpose these days as i use a 2" roughing gouge and that really is too big for doing the outside of a bowl. the tang is not as chunky as a round section bowl gouge so that reason is correct.
  8. yes that's the original auction i won and was aware that they had listed it as "free collection in person" but i did ask 16 hours before the auction ended about postage but got no reply. i've asked this of many a seller before and they've always been happy to post as long as i pay for it s did not expect them to refuse in the way they did as they were quite rude about the matter... i suppose i was just frustrated that they weren't prepared to post such a small item but that's my problem not theirs. i believe it's cocobolo from the stripes but i'll only know when i receive it. a kind arbtalker has agreed to collect it and do the shipping.
  9. 875 years.
  10. looks good for 60+. that's elm and i wouldn't expect it to move much anyway but you've done some in beech and in my experience that can shift or split quite a bit. on occasion the thicker bowls can move quite a bit as there is more tension left in the wood.
  11. how much do they move when fully dry?
  12. can it be laminated??? what is it for?
  13. that's been added since they relisted it... in my opinion they don't want to sell it as it's going to cost more in fuel (unless you live on their doorstep) to go get it rather than have it couriered...
  14. both...
  15. i've got more samples to send him but i need to have enough bits to make it a viable package as it cost him nearly $100 to get it shipped...
  16. that's correct...
  17. i already stated to them that it would be collected from their door and i got the impression that even if i did as you suggest they would just ignore it... that sort of ebayer...
  18. no, i don't know who geoff is and don't know where the sumac is either. any chance you could chase it up?
  19. i all, i recently won an auction for a bowl blank on ebay and the person insists that it must be collected and will not entertain the possibility of it being posted even though it's only a 5x5x3" block of wood. is there anyone in romford, essex who is willing to collect it and post it for me. i will of course pay for any fuel you use and the cost of postage of the blank. here is the listing. WOOD for turning, mahogany? Very dark heavy wood | eBay if anyone can help i'd really appreciate it.
  20. only if you can drop them in slough, i can't drive...
  21. £20-£30 each i'd say.
  22. i'll teach you if you like.
  23. you selling?
  24. this is the one i was referring to. it finishes so smoothly...
  25. what sort of size are they? just leaving them in rings for months will turn them in to firewood as they will split and crack badly, if they are to be turned it needs to be done as soon as possible after the tree is felled. my limited experience with holm oak say to me that it splits easily and shrinks a hell of a lot radially. a bowl i turned with half a ring of it about 7" diameter was wet turned and sealed in pva and left to dry. it died very quickly and this was the only bit that didn't split but the radial shrinkage made the rim of the bowl look like the peak of a roof. once i finish turned it though it was a very nice wood. seal all the endgrain you can with thick pva or a couple of coats of paint from any old pot's you may have knocking about.
