  2. it just needs to be stable really jon. what inch stock do you have???
  3. hi james, that sounds great, i can resaw no problem. my rip saw goes through just about anything. keep the wood as plain as you can so you can keep the olive stuff for fancier projects. this table is actualy for playing skittles on so don't need beautiful boards just stable ones to keep a flat surface. 3" would also be useful for the legs, can't have any wormholes though as it won't be accepted. this is to be a prototype for masters traditional games and must be perfect. i'm creating a drawing of the product that must be collapsible so it can be sent by courier as they often go far and wide including overseas. if the drawing (and possibly a scale model) is accepted then he will commission the table. .
  4. my side table art he bottom of page 1 on this thread was finished with danish oil. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/woodcraft-forum/60100-all-my-woodwork-so-far.html i also use danish for most of my bowls as it really brings out the colour and makes it look great
  5. i want i want i want....
  6. hi all, i'm looking for some hard wearing quarter sawn wood to make a table from in 1" thick boards by 7" wide and 6'+ long. need about 3ft3. interested in ash, hornbeam, elm, oak, or beech. must be 100% dry. ash or elm preferred. someone close would be great as i cant drive so would require delivery. give me a call if you think you've got something. 01628666191
  7. it's a shot in the dark but could it be a serbian spruce??? picea omorika
  8. well, i've finally finished turning all the walnut i got from clive and in the end i got a whopping 73 bowls from it. here are some pics of just the biggest ones and the large nests i got from the thick bits. one of these is only 12" but the rest are 18" up to 26". it made alot of shavings!!! there should be a 5th platter but it seems i didn't take a picture of it... .
  9. i'd happily pay £40-50. never chip such lovely wood. for me i'd want it split down the length in to log halves so i can make nests from them. if it's 12-14" then you'll get at least 10 blanks and i'll average 3 per nest so 30 bowls.
  10. it's on on monday night at 9pm on one of the channel 4 channels. repeated all week... glass blowing next...
  11. i liked the blacksmith's work and i've recorded the stonemason's episode to watch later but speaking as a turner and joiner with a qualification in furniture making i was woefully disapointed with the quality of the craftsmanship on the wood workers episode. they were primarily designers and they were asking them to produce top notch furniture. i went for a job at benchmark last year and saw the quality of what they produce and knew they were not up to standard and was gobsmacked that they wanted both tables. i think they wanted them for their design capabilities not their manufacturing ones...
  12. give me a pic of the wood and i might be able to help. is it ring porous or not???
  13. muttley does things like that... i can do too if you can find no one else.
  14. 2-3 feet is a good milling size. makes excellent timber, surely a mill would be interested???
  15. it's only lightly sanded and given a coat of danish. i don't believe in polishing something that will be beaten to within an inch of it's life night after night.
  16. i finally got round to turning a whole set of pins for the London skittles club which i'm quite proud of as the shape is a hard one to replicate exactly. they are 14 1/4" tall by 6 3/8" wide and made from two blocks of hornbeam glued together with internal dowels for extra strength.
  17. never turned any but would love to get hold of some, is there any spare for me???
  18. delabodge will use it. he's got loads at his yard. in answer to the question, yes it's good for milling.
  19. i should point out that i was glad that it was cut so thick it gave me room to do something useful with it on the lathe. rather than getting one bowl from a bit that's 2 1/2" thick i got a nest of 4 from a bit that was 6" thick as you can see the plank on the mizer needed to be split in two as it had a bit of pith running down the center. once split i can work out the best way to utilise the wood to show the grain... i got 12 blanks from the first board that clive gave me and i've already got another 30 from some of what you see in the back of his truck...
  20. i do have a few chunks that your welcom to as they are all split but you'll need to collect.. i'm right on j7 of the m4.
  21. great bit of wood here just shouting out to be carved... Very Unusual Conjoined Ash boughs Burr Woodturning Bowl Blank bur burl No 6 | eBay
  22. just a thank you to clive for taking me to his yard today and helping me slice and dice the beautiful walnut he has at present. i'm now very envious of his set up... i've so far managed to cut 30 blanks from about half of the wood ranging from 5" up to 26" and reckon i'll get another 20-30 from the rest. i'll take a picture of the pile of blanks when i'm finished butchering...
  23. i sent that link to delabodge but i think he's got enough welly at the moment...
  24. did i??? i forget half the things i've said before they come out my mouth these days... well to put everyone out of their misery it's "rhododendron", from savill gardens that is about 9-11" wide and i've processed about 6' of it in to nearly 20 bowls.
