  1. I've been blown off today!! Never before have I postponed a climb because of the weather however today I was due to remove 3 Poplars that had been pollarded/topped about 10 years ago at around 40 feet, they had around 25 feet of growth above the pollard height. There's a house with a consevatory about 15 foot behind them so looked at the cloud speed and movement in the tops and said lets do it next week shall we!!?? It felt abit strange walking away but we did logs instead so didn't waste the day! Is this a sign I'm getting old?? Answers on a postcard please! **** thats a sign I'm getting old!!
  2. What sort of price do you want or are you giving them away??
  3. Likewise the fuelwood one is to pricey when it can be done with a 25lt bin with the end cut off!! Thanks for that suggestion it works ok but i'm not sure how long it will last so need to look slightly more long term!!
  4. I find I get best results from putting a pallet on the ground screwing 4 pallets around to make a crate I then put a pallet on top of the crate/logs with a sheet over the top leaving the sides open, takes minutes to make and only costs four screws as I get pallets for free from the builders merchants. Using this method I have got Beech that was cut at the end of August beginning of September and split mid september now showing an average of 23-25%! Its stored ontop of a hill with nothing between it and the estuary of the river severn so pretty exposed!
  5. Thankyou, I'll call them later!
  6. I'm in need of some help! I'm looking for a simple device to make netting logs quicker, did it by hand last year as I didn't really sell many nets but this year I've had two shops take my nets to sell on so need to speed things up abit, I saw a device last year on Ebay and now I regret not buying it! It was like an open ended drawer on a hinged stand, you filled the drawer then slid the net over, then tipped it on its hinge and the net filled with logs slid off!! Any body out there have one thats surplus or know where I can get one!? Or any body know of another simple cheap solution?
  7. I've had plenty of Vw's, the best is definately the T4 not sure of the internals but having had all off them I would go LWB all day long as the SWB doesnt give you much scope! Have you thought about the crewcab? it gives even more scope and the cab can be kept saw dust free(ish) they are abit rare but they are out there! Mine is crewcab with aluminum tipper bought it earlier this year W reg with only 42000 miles, one owner and full service history for just £2250 only downside it has a petrol engine, 2.5 Audi 5 cylinder so will go on forever! I might get round to converting it to LPG one day.
  8. And doing a favour for all the kindling and netted log suppliers on here as if his details are posted it'll put all the other suppliers out of business as he deliver nationally and cheaply or free if the right quantity is bought!
  9. Builders bags not a cubic metre but piled high all the same!! I have alot of local competition including the Canals Trust who sell there cheapest load at £3 more for basically the same load! They are staffed by volunteers and have sold £22000 worth over the last 2 seasons, I am cheap but too cheap or just undercutting and making money to reinvest in my business! The last two months have allowed me new climbing irons, new climbing saw this month its a toss up between 390xp or 395xp but thats a different thread all together!!
  10. I'm cheapest in my area and can be as logs is not my primary income. I sell softwood bags at £35, mixed bags 50-50 hardwood/softwood at £45 and hardwood at £55 all less than 20% moisture content. I don't advertise I only sell through word of mouth or recomendation and I still sell enough to make it worth while doing, I could put my prices up and advertise but then there aint enough hours in the day to do to much!
  11. I know the guy your buying from as I get my kindling from him and yes he is cheap as chips, I suspect your Oak is actually Willow though so still technically hardwood just not very good hardwood!
  12. Dont get the Makita get the Dolmar...............its the same...........only a much nicer colour........!!
  13. How things have changed I remember back in 2000 working over live lines in Cornwall reducing overhang right over the top of lines and now you can't work within 15m?!!! I understand that shut downs is the way forward but I've been trying to get Western Power to do a shut down for over 12months now and that willow tree has big branches rubbing the wires! Had a site meeting there 12months ago and am no further forward!
  14. Not used the hedge cutter but do have the 62cc saw with 24"bar, its ok just have to regularly change the air filter and keep it properly sharp!! The airfilter is fabric and not easy to clean! If you get one new go over it and tighten any bolts that can be tightened as the chinese only seem to twist them in by hand, I had two fall out on the first job with it one on the chain brake the other on the felling dog!!!! Had it now for six months and it starts and cuts really well suprisingly!! And with a two year guarantee you can't go wrong!!
  15. After finding a small kids bike frame embedded and grown around between two Sycamore stems last week and finding a single nail 10ft up and 6 inches inside a massive lime when I was ringing it the week before I thought I'd ask the question "Found anything interesting or exciting today?" The rules should be it has to be completly hidden and only found when the sparks start flying!!
  16. I cut a twin stemmed sycamore the other day and found a small bike frame completely embedded between the two stems, it had been completely grown around I only found it when the sparks started!! Think theres a new thread in the making here!?
  17. I used various "kits" then stumbled across this style which taught me how to sharpen! I now sharpen free hand (the woodmans tickle) without issue. There are ones for each different file size. Husqvarna Chainsaw Chain Combi File Guide Gauge .325" x 1.3mm (H30) | eBay
  18. CCTV is not all its cracked up to be, its fine if the thief is nice enough to have no hat or hoody on and nothing covering his face and then looks at the camera but then you have to rely on someone viewing it and recognising him. The petrol/diesel mix is a waste of time it might satisfy you in thinking its screwed there vehicle but thats about it! At the end of the day the more barriers you put up between your kit and them the harder it becomes the less likely they are to attack your premises. We have Three gates all security locked before they get to the sheds, the sheds are then locked with vehicles parked infront, the kit inside is locked away or chained to the concrete floor We have a ten and a half stone Mastiff that looks like HOOCH wandering around inside the gates during the day, he makes quite a visible deterant. If someone wants our kit then they are really going to have to be committed. The likelyhood is they'd give up before getting anything away, yes they'd cause some damage but I'd still be working as I'd still have my kit!
  19. Where do you get your vented potatoe bags from they sound interesting??
  20. I have a Dolmar which I've had for maybe 8-10years and it's never put a foot wrong does everything a stihl will and was half the price and Dolmar is now Makita so if i were in the market for a new saw I'd be buying this.....!! MAKITA CHAINSAW 35cm 14" 33cc DCS340 | eBay
  21. Treated loads of it when I worked for the highways agency, had to get double suited and masked then cut and lead down by hand and stem injected with broadsword/broadshot, seemed to work well but was a bit of a ball ache!! Saw some big patches of it by the canal in Stroud just prior to the works starting to reopen the canal from the severn to the thames, it appears that they didnt know what it was and just sent a bloke in with a brushcutter!!
  22. I've read a few similar threads now and they just prove one thing we get royally ripped off in the uk!! Can any answer the questions "why is a fiskars x27 £25 (equivilant) in the USA and £85 in the UK if you can find a supplier" and "why is it so hard to get hold of an x27 in the UK" Answers on a postcard please!!
  23. Most arb workers would be classed as incidental users and therefore not need cpc, if you spend most of your working time cutting the tree down or processing the wood then drive the arb waste away or deliver logs the driving is classed as incidental to your main business. VOSA give the example of a builder collecting a lorry load of bricks in the morning from the merchants driving them to site and spending the rest of the day laying the bricks, the driving element is incidental to his main work of laying the bricks so he doesn't need cpc!
  24. I'm just guessing from all the negativity that if I were a member of the travelling community that happened to work in the Arb industry then I wouldn't be welcome on ARBTALK?? Surely in this day and age that can't be right can it? I've worked with some travellers who put alot of so called arborists to shame in skill and effort applied to get the job done!! Just because I drive a transit and live in a caravan does'nt mean I can't be good at my job or honest for that matter!
  25. I only ever use parcelforce and have never had any issue's I've sent over 450 items in the past 1 year without a miss! Had a HERMES courier telling us they had tried to deliver 3 times last week but we were out they obviously hadn't we have a shop which is open from 8 til 6 so they couldn't have missed us the name is above the door!! HERMES and various others use self employed couriers if you have a car then you can work for them so it's luck of the draw if you get a lazy dishonest driver its easier for them just to say theyve tried to deliver and failed then return to sender!!
