  1. Cheers guys. Back to the drawing board.
  2. Hi folks. I've got an electric Alko vertical log splitter. Problem is at times the blade seems a bit narrow and I have to wait till it reaches the bottom of the stroke to fully split the piece of wood. Would it cause any problems for the hydraulics if I got a bit welded on to widen the blade so that it splits the wood earlier in the down stroke? I've had a look on the 'show me your splitter' thread and there's quite a few with a wider blade but they are much bigger machines. Cheers
  3. From what I read, that seems to be about the average. I didn't think I was getting a great burn and the wood was wet but I'm more happy now.
  4. Thanks guys. I have been splitting (well not the coffee table, doors, work surfaces etc) what I measure but I get different readings when I push it in too far! I'll go with the gentle touch (as it gives a better reading). Looks like my newly split oak is 46% and my seasoned beech is 18%. Now what can I check tomorrow! Thanks again.
  5. Hi folks. I got a new Stihl moisture meter and was wondering? How far to you poke in the spikes? If I just rest them on the wood I get a reading of 16 - 18% but if I push them further in the reading goes up to about 20 - 22%. It's very addictive once you have one! Thanks in advance
  6. I recently used walnut oil (Asda oil bitty) and poured it in a zip lock bag with a holly kuksa. I soaked in well and seemed to dry quickly once out of the bag. Not as oilly to the touch and I also think it does not have the same strength of smell that linseed oil has. Was fairly cheap, easilly available and is obviously food safe.
  7. Anyone using/recommending sanding sealer? I would go for sanding sealer then oil. This could be topped up with beeswax polish once the oil settles. Have seen the beeswax finished with a buff on a drill and it comes up very well. A little natural/pure soap in the polish mix helps nd makes a more creamy polish and makes it go a little further.
  8. Thought I was on to a winner. 7 views and 6 replies so far. This is a hot thread!!!!!!!!!
  9. That explains the no bids situation!
  10. just incase anyone is interested. not sure how old but still no bids on it. HUSQVARNA CK380D CHAINSAW | eBay
  11. Surely a Stihl T shirt would have been stronger and much faster!
  12. Looks a bargain considering the list price is about £730 inc VAT. BIN for £320. Chainsaw Petrol 570 BNIB | eBay
  13. Hi S.C. Nice size of back garden for carving in! Nice carvings. Just started myself but only mushrooms! Splinters on the forum suggested decking oil as a finish. I used it and although it states clear on the tin it gives a slight orange colour. Maybe just bringing out the colour in the larch. It certainly waterproofs and appears to maybe slow drying and prevent cracks. I'm sure someone will have advice re a saw to suit your needs. Al the best Brian
  14. 7 years of fanatical firewood cutting with my Husky 350.......joined Arbtalk........read an article about exhaust bolts coming loose.........next thing an exhaust bolt comes loose. Is my Husky reading Arbtalk as well!
  15. I actually had some birch fried bark at the weekend. Allegedly tastes of bacon! I had the faintest taset of bacon and certainly tasted more like bacon than perhaps chicken curry
  16. Me too.........and I was 25 1/2 years younger, didn't have a sore elbow/back/............. Anyway, I'll just have to keep making charcoal my way in the livingroom!
  17. Thanks very much but I didn't make the table!!!!! Needs another coat of beeswax polish. Cheers Brian
  18. Just thought I would share a few pics of these popular little cups. Darker one in first pic was a dry elm burr that was my first and was hard work. The lighter one I'm not sure about the wood. The last dark one is birch burr and the ones in between are just birch logs.
  19. This is getting serious. I'm dreaming of carving these little blighters:001_tongue: Finished in 2 coats of decking oil from B&Q. Very waterproof and might help hold back cracking (Credit to Splinters for that tip and his advice of carving).
  20. If I could have got that far, I know what would have happened to that sword at the bottom! Looks great. Saw the thread about "what carving tools you got" and a few folk mentioned burners. Was wondering what effect they produced. Cheers

You might not see anything from the outside if it's been a screwdriver or something small. Once the tyre is off you can see from the inside. CCTV nearby (private or police)?
  22. i Tom, not sure about a metre long, but have a look at Wood Burning and Multi-fuel Stoves from Dowling Stoves. as Steve Dowling fabricates them. Dare say they will have lovers and haters but he might be able to customise something for you. Cheers Brian
  23. I think about 12kw from a 2.45 system. I have only used 4 units on the leccy meter in the last 3 days and that includes 2 washing machines full and one dishwasher.
  24. Impressive. And that's just the size of the peice of wood to begin with!
