  1. nice new idea
  2. lovely work Roni
  3. Not so far gnomie, still working fine after about a year or more. is a bit hard now but if you warm it over a kettle it gets v soft. i only tend to model complex shapes now so it isnt used as much
  4. i use bluetack...works fine and i had a load lying about
  5. so far i have made firewood out of 2 of my carvings...thats 2 in about 18 months. dont stress it, finish the piece and then decide. I have to admit though, when i cut the head off a sitting pixie i had attempted and messed up (properly messed up, mis-cut her legs and had to re design it when she was almost finished, ruined teh proportions and looked awful) it was kinda fun. imagined those i disliked teh most and 'cut off her head' like the queen of hearts.
  6. lovely Si, especially the one lying down....proper gentleness to its posture hoping to head back down to wales soon for a week or so to see the folks... will let you know when to see if you are about and can tolerate a visitor to watch and learn
  7. had to go for another stihl bat.... i think they are overpriced (by stihl, not Rob) but i have about 4 chains that fit them which i dont want to waste. I have pre-ordered a sugi bar which will be interesting to try out when they come in to stock. just have to hope the bar i ordered on monday evening arrives in time for saturdays carving or im gona dissapoint a client...not good for the reputation that pigeons are de-meated and the meat in the freezer... once i get a free moment i will make the pie.
  8. This weekend carved and finished 2 dragons, one a free one to somebody who has a garden next to the board walk in Stonehaven, good advertising (with a small sign below it) and one as a private commission plus roughing out a nice big squirrel for a local hospital garden. Today I got paid for the Dragon (nice) and started to finish the squirrel and my backup (and very much on its last-legs) carving bar died money in....money out. annoying as i was going to wait for the Sugi bars to come in later in October and get soem of those rather than overprices Stihl bars definitely one of those days never mind, went pigeon shooting later and got a decent bag... pigeon and rabbit pie i think
  9. I would be tempted to go for a throne not a bench with that lump. given how its standing now, turn the side branch into the seating area and the upright would form the back of the throne, style and details would be determined by the memories you want to evoke of the lady. its an ambitious project but given what its for, whatever you do will honor her memory
  10. its is also a bit of free advertising When some of my carvings at a local community site were vandalised the local paper covered it.
  11. another thread on the build quality... http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/chainsaws/58381-stihl-ms-150t-poor-build-quality.html
  12. like the simple lines there
  13. Like this one Tom. came out good. what aoil did you use to get that dark colour?
  14. how you getting on sourcing wood Alan?
  15. would never use a King Arthurs Tools "lancelot" or "squire". dam neer lost my finger (left index) to one of those on an angle grinder. had gloves on, all guards properly fitted in place, was working as advised etc but somehow my finger was dragged onto the disc and was horribly mangled. 2 opperations later i have a finger again but the tendons to the tip (and the nerves) are irreparable and im going to have to get the tip fused. the good thing about a saw is that the sharp bits are not right next to your hand...unlike with an angle-grinder type tool
  16. be careful with this one tho Tom, dont let the wind get it
  17. buying the best you can afford is good advice as for using power tools i guess there are two approaches A) hold off, practice lots and eventually you will be able to carve the pictures that you are holding in your head B) get the tools and carve what you have in your head now BUT... you will then have to go back and learn the techniques with a saw that will let you do the same stuff I started with saws then tried a few power tools but now i am back with the saws and I prefer it.
  18. you dont have a link for it do you Nigel?
  19. nice shots Jim. Was good seeing u briefly Gnomie i shoulda done a slightly smaller hedgehog then i could have done the burn-details better. It still made £110 for the charity so i was pleased
  20. fantastic day carving. Amazed at what some of the others managed to do in such a short time! I was just glad to finish on time, made no big mistakes and my charity quick-carve piece also sold well Im hooked on this competitions carving now
