1. we use green ash for bodging, best wood for it
2. true dat but i deliberately left some linseed-oiled carvings out and they went black. ones with decking oil didnt
3. I will be at carrbridge and also turn bowls on a pole lather (proper traditional method). I could bring some along to carrbridge if you are interested
4. quite a few pictures on my facebook carving page see if the link works..
5. i love doing community carvings (charity carvings)... makes me feel better than paid-ones knock out a couple of hedgehogs, mine are always in demand so they should sell well
6. great work there! as for 'having a go at that'... we all do this, we all have a look at the work of others and have a go ourselves. Its part of the learning process, to figure out how to carve things. Some stuff is original, some stuff is inspired by the work of others. I never mind when people have a go at my stuff
7. Wols are always fun to carve. as you develop your own style of owl you will add in more details etc you have captured the essence of the beast already. Keep it up
8.

Hi Rob

quick question, What are the options for putting a 10 or 12 inch carving bar on my husky 440e? im considering either modifying or selling at the moment as i rarely use it now

9. Isn't Osmo polyx massively expensive?
10. only problem with linseed oil is that it can go black with age if fungus gets growing on it.
11. sorry, im in Aberdeen, a bit too far to go
12. Im a decking-oil man. the B&Q own-brand works great. has a bit of lacquer in it which makes it nice and water repelent keep applying coats daily for a week or so, then you can probably reduce it. in gerenal its hard to oil too much but easy to not oil enough enjoy your carving
13. Nice idea Gnomey! Might try that when i get some pallets together
14. Good plan Tom, will bear that in mind. This commission only came in on Monday and I was carving on Wednesday so not much time to prepare. Customer knows the situation, i explained the cracking risks (in particular with the very wet nature of the wood) and he was happy to go ahead. Was a pretty cheep deal as well. I'm hoping that if he oils it enough then it will minimise the effects
15. I did my 30/31 with Phil Dunford in N. Wales. The time it takes to do the course depends on how much you know already and how many bad habits you have I did the training in 1 day (fairly long day but great day) and the assessment the next day. Cant remember the price but not excessive and its well worth it even if just learning to sharpen chains properly.
16. yep. have told the owner to oil lots and hope
17. carved an owl onto a standing larch stump a coupe of days back. was 5 foot high and about 1 foot in diameter, had been cut down about 2 weeks ago and i was amazed at hoe much resin/sap was pouring out of it. I could have easily filled a cup with it. I guess it is just the time of year when they are very active but this was almost comical. I had to keep scraping it up with sawdust to get rid of it or it was filling up my saws. picture was about 20 minutes after i had made the first cuts
18. she does amazing work but thsi was the one i remembered... http://www.jeffrouitto.com/images/fullsize/bigprojects/driftwood-horse-sculpture-5.jpg
19. Most of my work is in open-spaces, community places or schools/nurseries so I doubt its 'interacted with' in this way I have seen a picture or two of a chap that makes driftwood sculptures like this, one was a horse with a woman reclining next to it... maybe the same artist?
20. great work... our bodging group needs to get set up for steam bending in teh woods, just need to figure out how to make a steam box that is portable enough
21. Thanks all for the kind words. I plan to cut behind the door a little bit, as if it was half-open. just to give the kids another thing to imagine about. I have tried a few different oils but this one was B&Q's own brand decking oil (same as the DIAL stuff). Costs about £30 for 5 liters, goes on really nice, is water replant right off and seems to have a bit of lacquer in it so it leaves a bit of a shine. Its had a couple of coats now and i will probably add another before i am done. after that its up to the school to oil it regularly
22. I got a bag of black marbles and used on my latest carving, big eagle on tol of a large throne. lookes good. Have an Owl commission later this week so i will use them on that too
23. Finaly just about finished a big project i started before my angle-grinder-accident. Huge standing Beach stump at a local school/nursery. Very rotten in places so i have to work around those bits. Wanted it to be natural looking but also have enough interest to draw in the kids attention. Its going to be part of a outdoor learning trail for them. Once i get the big oak stump in place i will also be carving them a 6 foot high Gruffalo. Not many pics post-oiling but i will get more later. Definitely the biggest thing i have carved yet The lady sitting on it is the teacher who got me involved with the school in the first place. The chap standing on the seat oiling is her hisband and my sanding-helper
