Yeh your right - I do it often -but Im very experienced - and consider the job carefully before I do it. but I can see the other veiw - its not the safest method - you have got to know the rules before you can break them is my conclusion

dont think the root plate was up - the trunk crumbled at the base - in my experience cutting at the base on a tree such as this would result in the saw getting trapped

I dont know if the thinking has changed much - perhaps others can comment on this. As for felling a beech lot depends on other factors such as the proximity of the tree in relation to the people and property. A tree in woodland may be less prone to the wind If there was meripilus all around the bole - then that would be of greatest concearn If you are going to do root inspection then all support roots down to about 4" diameter are going to have to be thoroughly checked - thats quite a task

should be ok - next time if its geting too hot rev up your chainsaw with the tip of the bar close to something and see if you can see any spray comming off the bar

agree with above meripilus on beech is lethal - I know some respectable arborists who wouldnt hesitate to fell without root investigation !!

yes rain always sounds worse in the van, and the rain doesnt seem as bad when you have your ear muffs down

I dont like climbing in rain but i would drather have rain than the freezing fog making frost on the trees like we have had this week

just one thing to add - dead trees in woodland are more dangerous to climb than in the open
