  1. Nice system!! Any snags with draughts or thermal bridging?? Is outside door insulated?? No worries about "uninvited" guests gaining access??
  2. No good suggesting a discussion based on sound logic might ever be incorporated into a college course, too much hard work for assessors - might as well just make it multiple guess!!
  3. The EU free trade rules prohibit effective "control measures" to be implemented until AFTER it can be demonstrated that a risk / threat exists. Otherwise the nation implementing the block could be fined by EU (unless you're French, then the response is a Gallic shrug!) An example - C fraxinea, took hold in the East of Europe in the 80's, marched Westerly at a steady and easily observable rate until - shock horror, 30+ years later, it arrived with a vengeance in UK, apparently, to the great surprise of the host of QUANGO's that took so much airtime telling us all how hard they were working to create a defence / recovery policy. (As a side, personal frustration - well done FC, NE, WT, DEFRA et all - lightening efficiency, caught with your pants down despite 30 years notice - and people wonder why there is ever increasing lack of confidence in Public Sector??) So, imports from within EU "should" meet predetermined (self certified) biosec standards. Well, anyone who thinks there is an equitable and fastidious application of EU standards across all nations is a basket case! Then add the pursuit of profit into the mix and there we have the ingredients of the next series of plant health threats...
  4. OK, granted, perhaps not great examples to illustrate the point, perhaps if I'd said "do you ask your plumber, sparky, builder, mechanic etc etc for their UTR to prove they pay their tax..." It might have illustrated (what I feel) is the pointlessness and inadequacy of recording a UTR as some form of indication that somebody providing a service to you is also doing an accurate tax return. It's a futile gesture that seems to have been adopted as the "norm."
  5. My mate had the bulls eye bruising year before last, ex Royal Marine he knew it was Lymes but GP said no, not in West Country. GP obviously never been on Woodbury common, he was ill for months, eventually got the blood tests and got it sorted.
  6. I wouldn't argue with your point about a potential subby providing UTR to demonstrate "self employed" status, but I question the validity or 'point' of doing so. If I ask someone for their UTR to supposedly fulfil my obligation to due diligence, there is no mechanism for me to confirm they haven't just made up a number and presented it as their UTR. I can't phone HMRC and ask " is Joe Spunktrumpet's UTR 5674568?" They can't tell me because of data protection so it's a pointless exercise! I agree your proposition that seeking the UTR of a prospective subby is supposedly the right thing to do, I just don't see that it makes a toss of difference to anything. If you expand the logic, I should therefore ask Tesco, the local baker, the builders yard to give me their UTR when I buy something from them to "prove" they pay their tax - it's a nonsense! HMRC - I've **** 'em!
  7. That's a BEAUTY! Are they external windows in the back? Never seen like that before, nice!
  8. I meant to 'quote' the "longest tail" post, that was brilliant!
  9. Brilliant!! Little Bsterds are everywhere at the mo, log shed bait tray re-filled twice in 2 days, same in boiler house - there's a smell of death in there, and this afternoon while moving the rubble from this weeks building, a rat the size of a bunny jumped out.... Wish the dogs had been out!
  10. Sounds like you've got 2 fundamental building blocks.... Where does the problem lay then?
  11. When a cracking opportunity drops in totally unexpected!
  12. 60 bods @ 30k Or 70 @ 25k Or 85 @ 20k Starts to look like a cheeky little number!
  13. Ask the question.... sometimes the 'business' part of business, domestic, leisure only covers a single place of work which might not suit 'mobile' operations.
  14. Tiz an interesting and disappointing reflection Spikey! I had a similarly disappointing experience which was preceded by researching the rules / regs for churchyards after a large Beech failed in high wind in a 'closed' cemetery (church yard). Vicar called when tree went over, I went and did some SLG once it was on the ground and found that the LA is responsible for trees in a closed cemetery. So no job for the clean-up / make safe. I would have done 'at cost' out of community spirit but found they could have it done at no cost by LA so I passed that info straight on to vicar, didn't mind the time taken in research and admin - good learning experience. What I found rather at odds with the sense of moral obligation I felt (and was very comfortable with) was the anticipation that firewood might be available to parishioners and maybe the vicar would arbitrate it's distribution. What actually happened was he said "I'll be alright for firewood for years, there's an ancient law that states any tree that falls in a churchyard is the property of the resident vicar." Bit disappointing to be honest....
  15. There's a heap of info / discussion in the previous thread: "Mini digger or compact loader" You'll find it in 'search'
  16. There are some interesting specific regulations and historic laws associated with trees in church / grave yards. Worth researching properly and discussing thoroughly with clerk of the church council before undertaking to do 'tree' work.
  17. It's a good spot John. Just too far away to be practical for me despite the appeal! The process works for Woodlands.co.uk although in a different way (profit). If there were an opportunity S / SW UK, I'd be in for a joint purchase.
  18. A "show us your fireplaces" thread! Brilliant!
  19. Is it domestic? Don't forget to factor in brash removal if you're dealing with it. Can be bloody awkward and time consuming trimming for the chipper if it's all knarly and burn may not be an option if domestic - Don't forget Environment Agency D7 exemption if burning - esp if in a domestic area - guarantee someone will grumble.
  20. That's innovative, like that!
