  1. Not great pictures (shooting from dark to light on iPhone this afternoon) but here's a Beech with several major limb failure stubs, perhaps a coronet style cut would present better options for natural recovery rather than a flush cut?
  2. Nah, Boris is on the horizon,,, then the fun will be back in politics!
  3. twice the distance from each end to the centre......
  4. This and post 23 seem to make sense in certain circumstances where text book approach might not be possible (like the picture indicates.) Horses for courses?
  5. And thieving and thuggery it seems - mores the pity. Thoroughly depressing for the general (law abiding) public, police and councils no doubt.....
  6. Grandpa Simpson, Yogi Bear and Daffy Duck are eagerly awaiting the call to shadow cabinet....
  7. That's Andy Burnham getting his ass spanked by Tom & Jerry..... https://youtu.be/l6Hfk13LZIQ
  8. Labour - a party led by Tom (Watson) & Jerry (Corbyn)..... You couldn't make it up!
  9. Not sure how the split has been divvied up within the UK in terms of "fairness" for each home nation, and whilst this won't be much help in your quest for funding in Wales, but following a visit to ConFor show, I am fully disenchanted with the whole grant funding process. It appears to me that the administrative mechanisms and processes for verification of grant applications is established in such a way as to ensure maximum expenditure of public money on maintaining administrative tiers of bureaucracy rather than getting the money out to the end user. Here's an example - Register an interest via FC "FACE" scheme Sylva Foundation • news FC then select the most 'credible' applications and pass them over to the regional 'advisory agent' who charges around £500/day for 2 days 'mentoring' to the applicant which should increase the chances of their application being approved. I'd like to know how much money is spent on admin and bureaucracy and what % that is of the total money made available for grant funding.
  10. Proactive has to be better than reactive!
  11. Shame it wasn't the fine PLUS replant with (as close as reasonably practical) same as removed. The total of the fine would be less relevant then, but the ability to "gain" from the action would be negated. That would be a good message to get out there....
  12. Hefty fine for Harrogate developers after destroying protected trees in Ripon - Ripon Gazette 38k fine and no mention of replanting order. It's a result but hardly a deterrent.
  13. Just going on what's available in the picture, it doesn't look like it would be possible to get a text book 3 part cut back to the collar as per 3998 without impacting that other leader and possibly opening up an even larger wound. Maybe that's why it's spec'd out as it is. Trying to make the best of a situation that doesn't sit perfectly in the text book model?
  14. That link may not have pasted properly. Try google National Tree Safety Group - Common Sense Risk Management of Trees.
  15. 2 parts of that post have a distinct wiff of BS (and a faint odour of desperation!) 10 year life & a raise in precept. Have you seen this before: http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/FCMS024.pdf/$FILE/FCMS024.pdf A good read in its own right but could also inform your argument and put the PC in a position that would need authoritative and informed decision making rather than what appears to be a brown envelope job 👍🏻 (Not saying it IS a brown envelope job.... Just that it "could" be interpreted that way. It might just be straight forward lack of appreciation or appropriate skills / knowledge on the part of the PC) Gripping saga either way!!!
  16. Sound question! All insurers (car, health, house etc) are great at taking your policy premiums It's only when you ask them to deliver on their promises you get a realistic appreciation.
  17. Was really quiet by mid afternoon John. I stayed for a beer but even that closed by 6. He did say "if you have anymore just settle up tomorrow!" Which was brave since I had a sleeping bag in the truck! I was going to stay overnight and see if there were any bargains for sale late on day 2, but logic got the better of me - spend a bundle on beer just to save £20 on a lanyard or some other tat I don't really need! Was still one of the last vehicles in the car park and I left at 7. Lucky it was a good weather day, it'd have been pretty dull in the rain.
  18. I didn't get there til 14:30, didn't rush because I thought I'd stay over night and re-visit any good bits today. I'd done / seen what I needed to in an hour, had a pizza & a pint so went home! It was like a ghost town on the site after 15:00!
  19. Agree all above Chris, except that in red which seems to intimate a level of consciousness in the decision making process. Now there's a whole theological discussion for another day (hopefully no time soon!) Looking back at AFOTD No.21 (although relating to trees rather than fungi) "concentrations of factors" - that phrase would probably neatly encapsulate the circumstances you detail above. I just can't stretch to embracing the possibility of human traits such as conservatism, patience, acceptance, strategic consumption etc in fungal colonisation. It would destroy one of the most important aspects I enjoy in arboricultural problem solving - things happen for a reason rather than on a whim (as is the case in humans.)
  20. Doesn't the final sentence contradict the amended analogy in the preceding paragraph? Are you suggesting there is a form of 'self regulation' in the consumption of available food source? That would be a mind bender!
  21. Here's an interesting reference - http://www.efncp.org/download/EFNCP_wood_pasture_productivity_research111213.pdf Perhaps a 'break' from grazing whilst the scrub reestablishes, then a phased reintroduction of grazing to a greatly enhanced landscape would even benefit the hill farmers through better quality forage for the flocks. When will the policy makers start thinking in periods of 100's of years rather than 10's or 1's?
  22. 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 😆😆😆
