  1. Smaller saws are husky 550xp 254xp 357xp 362xp special I also have a husky 480cd which was my occasional big timber saw but as it has no av or chain break that has been replaced by the 9010 which is so much more comfortable to use has more power and I don't think it weighs any more as the old husky was all metal.
  2. That would make moving site a good deal less troublesome!
  3. Thanks Looks like I will be swapping the studs when I need a new bar then, happy with the saw though pulled well buried to the dogs
  4. So is it possible to get a sprocket nosed bar for a makita 9010 with out adjusting the mounts? I just had one delivered yesterday with the solid nose standard bar on it. Going to try it out on some oaks today
  5. Do they still make the 199? been looking online and the biggest I can seem to find is the MY 8200 at 80.7 cc prices do look attractive though
  6. I remember reading an article on American chestnuts which had a catastrophic disease on a similar scale to ded. They had done some work bringing in genes from an Aisian chestnut which was resilient and made a hybrid with most of the carcatistist of the American chestnut but which didn't die. Unfortunately I have lost the article but you mat be able to find something on it.
  7. When I had the sawmill I used to chuck it over the fence in to next doors pig pen, the pigs would run over and dive in the pile loving it and by the next day it was all trodden in. Farmer was happy and it got rid of it didn't get anything for it though.
  8. I will have a look at them, the biggest we have got are around 70dbh and 20 to 30 foot of log. It will be going on my valtra 6400
  9. Hi all I have a fair amount of oak log to fell, Done a bit just skidding behind the tractor but as we seem to be getting more of this sort of work I am thinking of getting a 3 point linkage winch. But am not sure what size or make to go for? Any advice would be great!
  10. I wouldn't part with big money for a saw on ebay but i have got some lovely older saws for not a huge amount and been happy with them. i think its just a case of reading and re reading the description and looking twice at the pics to make sure your not imagining its better than it is. and also know when to stop bidding lots of saws get bid up and go for money thats not worth the risk it might be good money for a good saw but till it arrives it might not be a good saw!
  11. Practical Forestry for the agent and surveyor. by Cyril Hart was my forestry Bible at uni and is still a book i refer to now if i want to brush up. it contains almost everything you need to know! isbn 0 86299 962 6 my other fave is The Silviculture of Trees used in British Forestry by Peter S.Savill isbn 0 85198 739 7 which is a great guide to all the trees used in forestry in this country and talks about the best sites for them and there uses, its more forestry relevant than most tree guides which tend to have lots of garden and od ball trees in them.
  12. I must say i really do love my job theres nothing better than being out in the woods and playing with some noisy toys
  13. I have been working in a lot of farm/estate plantings from the 80s and they are full of plastic if the tree guards are not still on the trees they are all over the place or there are spiral guards grown in to them. it makes sense to me to move to biodegradables
  14. yeah it cuts out without the chain brake on
  15. can no one help? he has taken the spark arrester out as i read some where on here that might help but its still cutting out on him, and its a long old trek to the shop to have it looked at
  16. I use soya oil which i get from Makro £17.49inc VAT for 20l and its low in cholesterol too!
  17. Hi all my mate uses a 550xp and it has recently started cutting out on tickover, seems alright in use but stops before he can measure his first product. we are currently working in some hardwood first thinnings and there is nothing big about to try and retune the saw in. has anyone had this before? and is there a simple fix?
  18. Thanks Guys so i am now thinking of getting a 28 on the grounds that if the 480 doesn't like it it will fit a more modern saw when i can afford/justify one
  19. I am tempted by a 30 i had the 20 in a big dead oak the other day and it didn't seem to notice where as the 362 was not happy at all.
  20. Hi all i have just recently got a Husqvarna CD480, despite being quite an old girl she is lovely to fell with. The saw came with a 20 inch bar which is in poor condition and a chain which looked like it had been cutting the floor more than the trees. having sharpened the chain up there is not much life left on it, and rather than getting a new chain for the old bar i was thinking of getting a slightly longer bar and chain as i only use the saw for the occasional big tree when i need something bigger than my 362 on a 18. i am used to all the different bar mounts and am wondering if there is any current husqvarna which has a interchangeable bar with this saw? as that will make it easier for me to order a new bar and chain Thanks
  21. we used to have chaps coming in to our yard looking for interesting bits for turning, there may well be a local turning club who might have members looking for bits? they don't tend to want to pay much though but if you cant bare to burn them....
  22. The bluntness kinda takes the fun out of the vid. i would be to embarrassed to turn up to a show with such a blunt saw even if it was quite an interesting one!
