  1. Hi all Just been helping a mate out today across the border clearing some land for possible development. I'm useless at quantity estimating but there is at least 20-30t on the floor after today. Mainly Ash but the odd Beech and Oak. Biggest Ash was 19 inch dia. I would love to pass on some offers to him, it can be stacked or left on the deck how it is and tidied from there. One other option would be haulage to the Ivybridge side of Plymouth for one artic if anyone knows of anyone? would suit a return run for some foldy foldy. Too much for me and the Ifor! cheers
  2. Translation: Nuf Sed - Devonian for 'enough said' Good veg name though
  3. fascinating thread GardenKit. Its not often you read through all 14 pages of posts! I must admit I have never even heard of Aspen and to think I am only 40-50 miles south west of you! I must admit the Stihl 2 mix engines i've got seem to run with so little fumes that the extra cost would probably not be worth it but I can see the benefits of those things you dust off to use once or twice a year. I have mentioned to a customer of mine who has a Stihl leaf blower he uses once every 12 months as it would suit him down to the ground although sourcing it may not be all that easy.
  4. Local Ruby Red beef. Top Rump. Nuf Sed.
  5. slope the concrete/postcrete away from the post when tamping too but i do the same, hate seeing concrete halfway up the post!
  6. Agree - sometimes we use a shovel of rapid and a shovel of normal depending on the length of a run. Postcrete everytime on runs of less than 10 posts and where access is a ballache for a barrow. Would recommend buying it in bulk (60 bag pallet+) from somewhere like Tradepoint (B & Q trade thing) as they always seem rock bottom on price. Slight derail when featheredging I use a Paslode first fix for everything - 90mm smooth for the rails and 51mm rings for the boards (only works on good quality FE!) as its much safer than trying hammer a 4 inch nail into a post which may not have gone off enough.
  7. i'll sing the praises for the 261, mine has outlasted 2 Makitas and also the 20% reduction in fuel is no sales gimmick as when working alongside a 346 i am willing the 261 to run out so I can join the man on the 346 who is having a smoke. Saving a gallon of fuel everytime the man with the 346 using five gallons adds up over a year and you can taunt him in the pub when you are drinking your savings!
  8. # The 7901 is the most unreliable saw and shouldn't really be sold as a pro saw as it is just not up to the job. Just replaced mine with 441 with the autotune and it is a belter
  9. Is that South Hams DC bin by the way? Mine has the lid up constantly as they seem to collect them every other month!
  10. Maybe silly question TCD but what is different on it than say a Makita DCS4630? I look at one every day and choose my 261. Don't say looks! All the old boys say Dolmar once kicked Stihl/Hsq into touch until Makita turned them a funny colour
  11. glad you are pleased with the 241mtronic, i'm expecting a 441 mtronic tomorrow which i'll be putting straight to work on some windblown Oak. I've heard they seem to get better over time? something like 5-10 tanks depending on what you are doing
  12. Afraid not TCD; a Downing of South West Dartmoor, there's a few of us about mostly unrelated!
  13. Down here in South Devon everyone is at it, mainly due to the Larch Disease; people are either buying Larch logs which I would not dream of selling. Then in those Northerly gales in April where the small stands of Larch (mainly 5-10 acre plots set amongst hardwoods) once stood all the hardwoods fell like dominoes and we lost another load this afternoon. When you have people selling hundreds of tonnes of Larch and some others selling windblown hardwood for the same price it's difficult to win unless you can be competitive. Competitive means scaling up which means hard work or severe outlay when the whole Ash thing is waiting in wings. Thread question answered possibly.
  14. I've only got and ever used the Gomtaro 210mm and think its the dogs pink bits so I dread to think how good the others are as the Gomtaro hasn't had much praise on this thread. Anyone else found the blades to deteriorate if left wet in the sheath for a while?
  15. how old is the problem 261? I have had mine for just over 12 months and it has not put a foot wrong?
  16. just ordered the MS 441 C-M from Jonesie at a price less than my local dealer could do the Standard 441. Self engine tuning has got to be the future? Gone for the 20 inch bar and cannot wait to see some better engineering than the Makita 7901 which it is replacing. Got the MS261 with a 16inch bar and it has been faultless. Everyone who has used it are thinking of chopping in their 346xp's for one!
  17. looking at getting a 441-C-M to run 18 mainly and 25 inch baroccaisionaly. F r Jones has it at https://www.frjonesandson.co.uk/products-page/machines/chainsaws/petrol-chainsaws/stihl-ms-441-c-m-chainsaw-70-7cc/ Thinking of buying it with the 25, ordering an 18 inch seperately and changing the 15 inch on my MS261 for a 13 inch, Any thoughts?
  18. thanks to all for your kind responses and slightly overwhelming advice. Sounds like I need a tidier workbench, some more tools and to dust off the old Pink Floyd CD. Not to mention the patience of a saint! I must admit from stripping the saw down and seeing the damaged piston the job looked easy. As my father in law says experience can be expensive so its best to use other peoples! Hopefully I won't need to post again but who knows. I am based in South Devon so if anyone knows a decent cash worthy person who can help with repairs as my Husky long reach hedge trimmer has also lost all compression today. Just waiting for the third thing to go Pete Tong tomorrow. Thanks Adam
  19. great tip about the arrow on the top of the piston, it can be seen on the picture CYLINDER & PISTON FITS MAKITA DCS6401 DCS7301 & DCS7901 | eBay starting to doubt myself as I would have probably not have given it a thought! That is the only manual I can find so it will have to do. I think I will go down the route of photographing everything and putting aside a good few hours so I might stand a chance of remembering where everything came from! thanks for the advice
  20. Thanks for the reply; I can only find user manuals with a parts breakdown do you think this will do? I have ordered the new pot and piston so I will let you know how I get on - might not be before christmas!
  21. I bought a Makita dcs7901 of a mate for £100 a while back and it died a couple of weeks ago. I have stripped it down and found a chunk missing out of the piston. I have seen new pot and piston kits on ebay for £50 and I am contemplating having a go at fitting it myself as it is a saw I only use probably once a month. As a novice am I getting ideas above my station? Be as honest as you like! Thanks Adam
  22. Risk of sounding stupid - does a the amount in cubic metre of logs depend on what length and size of split? My d22 Navara double cab with logs 12-15 inches long and split big would have far more 'fresh air' in it than my normal load which has a bit of everything from branchers 2-3 inches up to bigger chunks split from big rings. I find people like a bit of everything but then again i'm too nice! I'm always surprised when i stack a customers logs - a truckload looks tiny!
  23. could open a tin of worms but why is burning up a 'no no' by some on here? i cart tonnes of hedge clippings off to burn each year as many jobs don't justify a chipper as we can tip with an Ifor with greedy boards and push up with a wheeled digger. Pikeyish but effective!
  24. My DCS7901 died (i think) today. Can't pull at all so assuming seized. Seen pot and pistons on ebay for 55 quid is it a DIY job or best left to a dealer or similar? Wouldn't mind a go at it myself!
  25. New to all this but just got a DCS7901 (less than 18 months old) cheap off of a mate who ran it with an 18inch bar and he found that it wasnt' 'gripping' the wood on anything near the length of the bar which is a new one on me. He seemed to have all the depth gauges spot on. Got a new 28inch bar and chain on order so will see what happens. Anyone had similar problems? heard of a local estate who has one and they said that they get a similar but not so major problem. Possibly down to how they sharpen it. Any ideas? Thanks in advance Adam
