  1. At the end of the day all you can do is inform the customer. Reducing the sail 'might' allow the tree to enclose the cracks with complete annual rings but also might need further pruning to control its canopy size while it's doing that. If the client understands that there may be further/continuing financial commitment to retain the tree - their decision. On the other hand, removing and replacing the tree has a disbenefit in the loss of amenity for a number of years until a new tree grows. Another option, if circumstances allow, might be to reduce that, establish another tree nearby and remove the maple when the young tree reaches a decent size. Choices, choices, choices...
  2. Has anyone looked into the details of using these (legally) commercially? How difficult is it?
  3. That goes to explain the torsional cracking, it looks to be in a wind tunnel. From the photos, I think I'd be looking at a significant canopy reduction at a minimum
  4. Can you charge them from the cigarette lighter?
  5. Bet you've enough stacked under the mattress to buy one It think this thread wins the award for the first major derail of the new-look Arbtak forum
  6. Any pictures illustrating the tree within its surroundings?
  7. Yep!
  8. Maybe trying to log on with the app
  9. After providing the infrastructure for recharging (difficult when you can't park outside of your own home) and the new power stations to power them. Interesting program on Radio 4 last week, where a speaker mentioned that the new plant that is coming online soon won't supply the addition requirements if everyone goes electric, even if other power demands for everything else remain constant for the next twenty years. Visiting my local hospital for the last two years, there's been the same two cars plugged in every visit. What happens when the other 500-1000 cars become electric? The infrastructure requirements are mind-boggling. Stock market tip! Put your money into extension lead manufacturers
  10. I don't know, but I have heard this asked before. My memory fails me as to the answer. This is now going to gnaw at my mind all day, considering why they would be
  11. So the term 'hard as nails' isn't actually that defining as a category?
  12. I read that thread, and forgot about it. Can't find it now!
  13. I've a client who is having to vacate a yard next week. In it is a pile of prunings, leaves, hedgecutting etc that have amassed over several years. We've looked at it with a view to pulling out and chipping the larger stuff, but it isn't viable as even after that there will still be a few ton of organic matter that won't chip. Has anyone got a decent sized shredder type machine and mini-digger around Manchester who'd be interested. The yard has to be empty so post-shredding it's got to be away. I know the gardener/landscaper and he assures me it isn't fall of bricks but there will be gravel from sweepings etc. He's conscientious, so there shouldn't be much in the way of litter - that went into skips as collected. All I need is someone who can say " I can do that next week" so I can pass their details on to the client on monday morning. PM me please (if you've worked out how to already ) or post Many Thanks Gary
  14. Fairy liquid and sugar, at a pinch. other washing up liquids are available
  15. 'Cashin hand' might create some unwanted attention from certain revenue collection agencies... just saying
  16. You forgot the hi-viz vest tied to the back!
  17. You've got mail!
  18. Don't see that many euc's, or leave them around for long. But used to see wasps a lot on elms particularly around the sapwood.
  19. And, unfortunately, some people just go work work on a Monday morning thinking about going home on a Friday night! Sorry Kevin, I know exactly where you're coming from but now, personally, take a more pragmatic approach or view that stops me getting stressed. I can go out tomorrow and visit half a dozen sites and find faults, from the original arb survey that wasn't fit for purpose, tree work specs that are ambiguous, planning cock-ups that lead to unintentional tree loss, inadequate protective fencing etc etc etc. (sorry, not tomorrow I've seen all that today!) But tomorrow will be the same. It's never-ending, so to keep my own sanity I just choose my battles a bit more carefully nowadays
  20. I don't know why, but I was assuming that they were generally pretty much open enough, to allow a free flow of air. This is where my lack of construction knowledge will catch me out. I've been a bit confused as some of the literature that I've been looking at for suspended ring beams shows impermeable surfaces over the existing ground levels. Piling for reasons other than tree roots? Just found this on a quick search and assume that it would be the minimum specification for air flow if those are airbricks/vents in the exterior wall connecting via the wall cavity to the air void below. Really liking this new attachment method
  21. So who measured the trees? If I ever get that far south, I'm sure you'd be able to make enough waves to go surfing Just remember, some officers have long memories
