Stopped to look at this birch last week, just because of the unusual growth. The photos aren't great but the interconnected 'ribs' around the stem are unusual and very pronounced. I don't think this is reaction wood due to dynamic stresses or internal cracks, but rather a development due to historic changes in the rooting environment. Thoughts please, (or, hit me back please)

Like any situation where colonisation has occurred, it's all a matter of degree, finding/trying to find a balance between reducing the lever arm while not reducing the trees ability to create the energy for defenders. Not it easy or an exact science. -

I'm doubting my initial thoughts, seeing the bark in the last picture, it's a lot rougher than it looked from above. But the green band I meant is....

I'll throw laburnum into the mix, particularly because of the photos 2 and three. pic 1 looks like a poplar, but is overexposed, pic 2- slightly oakish, but the bark in three and four along with the green band (cork cambium?) suggest laburnums
